480 U.S. Nuclear Warheads In Europe
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 08:14 AM by RestoreGore
Why is this necessary? While homelessness and poverty rise this is what our money goes for? Where is the outrage? Another violation of an international treaty that will simply be allowed?

http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=5510§ionid=3510206

A documentary aired on Italian TV channel, RAI 24, has claimed that the U.S. military is keeping 480 nuclear warheads across Europe, 90 in Italy.

Fifty of the warheads are being kept at Aviano Air Base, north-east of Italy and forty others at a military facility near Brescia.

The documentary warns of possible nuclear strikes against countries in the Middle East.

The Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has banned the deployment of so many nuclear warheads in Europe.

The documentary has also called on the Italian government to comply with its obligations under the NPT and demand the removal of the weapons from the Italian soil.

Pointing to remarks made by NATO's Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Weapons of Mass Destruction policy, Guy Roberts, the documentary emphasizes that all sovereign countries have the right to call on the U.S. government to remove all its nuclear weapons from their soil.

1. Well, I'm Outraged--Now that I Know
that's the rub, though. Getting good information out to people.

2. Yes, and then getting the people to take action on the information
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 08:17 AM by RestoreGore
That seems to be even harder to do. How many will read this and not even care? Apathy can be deadly.

5. The US never signed a treaty that it didn't reserve the right to break
Especially with this particular administration. Sometimes I think * considers treaties as something for the other side to live up to. We'll try to live up to them, as long as they suit our "national interests".

12. Santiago treaty
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=395091&mesg_id=402136

I was asked why the United States did not honor the Santiago treaty in 1991 signed by the United States, which clearly states that any government democratically elected in the Western Hemisphere that seeks the support of other Organization of American States member nations, when threatened with an overthrow, will be assisted? That agreement was signed by the first President Bush in 1991.

6. "Claims"
Is the magic word. When the 86th Fighter Wing moved from Ramstein to Italy, and became part of the 31 Figher Wing their nukes stayed on Ramstein. But what do I know. What I do know is there is no 480 nukes throughout Europe. Im not saying there isnt any, but most of them was returned to the States in 1991.

7.  I just called my Senator about it
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 08:58 AM by RestoreGore
I will wait to see if I hear from him about it. Italians also were out in force last February protesting the expansion of a base through the heart of the city of Vicenza. Why the need for that?

This was a quote from one of the protesters:

"I don't want any more Americans here and I don't want a new base. They should just leave us alone," said Pucci Mori, a resident of Vicenza, who lives near the proposed base expansion.

"Wherever they go in the world, Americans cause trouble."

Defend it all you want, but there is something afoot that we need to know about. ONE is too many.

14. And you can chose to be an idiot and believe Hans Blix
In the summer of 1991 very few MP's from the 164 MP co, the 86 Security Police Sq, and the 569 USFPF in Kaiserslaurtern had any days off, we were providing escort duty for the removal of nukes in Europe. During the summer of 91 the "X" area of Miesau army ammo depot was closed and all the chemical and nuclear artillery shells was sent to Ramstein to be flown back to the states via C-141 cargo jets. Bitburg and Hahn AFB's was closed, their nukes was sent to Ramstein AB to be flowen back to the states. During this same time period Ramstein had an above ground Nuke storage area. That was closed and most of the nukes were sent back to the states and the few remaining was moved to new underground storage facility's underneath PAS (protective aircraft shelters). In this day and age I cant believe anyone still believes what they hear on the MSM.

15. I will believe Hans Blix before I believe you
Calling someone an idiot is not how you look credible. Per the report they are ALL OVER EUROPE. Were you all over Europe? Don't sit there and expect me to believe there are no nukes in Europe. I don't believe it for one second especially in light of the madmen we have running this government. You want to defend them, go ahead...and then call ME an idiot.

8. NATO headquarters blocked by protest
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 09:08 AM by RestoreGore
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/nukes-out-of-nato-080606

They were protesting the 480 nuclear warheads spread across Europe.

Excerpt:

Sixteen years after the end of the cold war, 480 US Nuclear weapons remain in Europe. They are currently stationed in Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK. Each of these nuclear weapons has a destructive capacity of up to ten times that of the bomb which destroyed Hiroshima, and have a combined power capable of wiping Europe off the map.

Last week a report released by the Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDC) chaired by Hans Blix called for the 480 US-owned and controlled nuclear weapons to be removed from Europe and returned to US soil. The WMDC report provides great detail on the dangers of US nuclear weapons. The Commission also explains how these weapons impede international efforts to negotiate further nuclear reductions with Russia.

10. Documentaries may not always be accurate
The US military should know how many of our nukes are in Europe. But I doubt if they'd give the number to an Italian film-maker (or anyone else without a need-to-know)

If a number was given out, it's probably fiction, leaked for some strategic purpose.

480 is a good number. So is 4800. So is zero.

Politics is all well and good to discuss, but some are so steeped in political BS they can't even see reality.
