New DU Group: Bill Richardson Group
The mission of the DU Bill Richardson Group is to discuss the current Governor of New Mexico and 2008 Presidential candidate. Members are invited to discuss Richardson’s role in the Democratic Party and the 2008 campaign; his wide range of experience in Congress, the Clinton Administration, and New Mexico’s Governorship; his positions on such issues as foreign affairs, the economy, and our environment; as well as campaign and media appearances, speeches, and writings. Members may also discuss ways to support the Richardson campaign. Only comments portraying support for Governor Richardson’s campaign, or projecting a positive view of his campaign, are welcome.

9. I like Bill Richardson, particularly after that MoveOn.Org thing on Tuesday
He gave a solid performance and kind of impressed me. I didn't know all that much about him, which helped him; no expectations, but he did good.

10. Sometimes I think Richardson is the most electable of...
...the Democrats currently running.

Consider:

Unlike the other major contenders, he comes from a battleground (toss-up) state, New Mexico, that borders a slight-lean Republican state (Colorado) and is not all that far from another toss-up state (Nevada). His Latino heritage may give him a mild edge in possibly both Nevada and Florida against any Republican candidate.

Not being a member of Congress, it is harder for the Rove machine to slime him. Now, I am not saying that a governor's record could not be slimed and distorted, just that it is easier to do so when the Democrat is, say, a Senator (recall John Kerry). If a congressperson votes against something because he/she thinks another even better bill will be proposed, or votes for something because he/she supports 90 percent of it believing it's the best that can be accomplished while opposing the other 10%, well that voting record can be distorted. "Flip-flop" charges would be harder to initiate against a governor than a congressperson.

11. Kick...
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 11:08 AM by riglerej
A long-time lurker, I guess I'm still unable to "recommend", but I'll happily "kick" this thread.

I especially like the idea of a Richardson/(Obama|Edwards) ticket, regardless of whehter or not they are "running for VP". Actually, I think I'll have to lean toward Edwards, just for the campaign experience he brings. Obama's had it way too easy so far, and will probably fold once the RW noise machine really kicks in.

To consider: Edwards brings campaign experience that lost. He's won one Senate race and then didn't finish his term.

Richardson has won elections and respect in a battleground state.

Just saying though...

Thanks for coming out to post!

38. It really is in poor form
in a thread to dis another's candidate while asking for your candidate NOT to be.
Edwards and Kerry did NOT lose the election--as the information from Ohio is coming in.
I will refrain from pissing on YOUR parade about Richardson, even though you had no problems doing it to Edwards.

12. I'll consider him. One question first - I formed an opinion about
the DLC that is not complimentary to them. At this point in time, I will not support anyone the DLC is pushing or anyone they are going to try to 'install' as campaign winner. Where does Richardson stand, what about Campaign Manager, high up staff?

Richardson is in our opinion the best suited candidate and our choice for some while.

Some of our family and friends are moderate Republicans and would consider voting for him. We think he has appeal to many people.

19. Yes! Yes! Even our in very conservative NM county, he is respected
He spoke up at a recent Governors' conference, eloquently explaining why our country needs voting machines with voter-verified, auditable trails; NM was among the first to demand these machines and we voted with them in last November's election.

He signed a bill allowing medical marijuana...the first Presidential candidate to do so. That takes huevos.

Then, mainly & of course, his experience in negotiating & foreign affairs.

Si se puede.

21. Post Rules
I love you guys at DU. You do an incredible service. But I have a really negative reaction when I see things like, "Only comments portraying support for Governor Richardson’s campaign, or projecting a positive view of his campaign, are welcome." I mean, open dialog is the whole point. Sure trolls suck, but if you carry out the control and censorship to a fuller extent, what do you get? Something quite resembling the cocoon of self-reinforcing idiocy that we witness in the current reigning band of clowns. I reminisce here about the social commentary in the recent film 'Children of Men' on the resistance group ultimately emulating and becoming corrupt like those in power. I may be getting carried away here, but if so, please explain the justification for taking the bastion of open dialog that is blogs, and bringing sorts of distasteful and suspicious forms of censorship to it. Put another way, why the hell would you be against potentially healthy criticism in the blog?

24. Groups, Sir, Are A :Little Different From Forums Here
They are meant to be places for people who share a common interest to gather, and discuss the thing among themselves, not argue about it with people to whom it may be nonesense. The proposed Group here is for supporters of Gov. Richardson, and the restrictions above would apply only in that Group. If he comes up for discussion in the forums, you will find he comes in for his share of criticism here.....

26. Kickin' I like him
At this juncture I'd like to see a fresh face, a reasonable person, someone with deep foreign policy experience, not a rock star, not a lightning rod for past issues.

I don't agree with all of his positions. I suppose that could be said of anyone supporting any candidate.

I think he would be an excellent nominee.

Thanks for opening this thread.

28. I saw him on the Daily Show
I was really impressed: he's measured, thoughtful, and has a wonderfully wry sense of humor. I'm not sure who I'm supporting at this point, but definitely not Hillary. She's made too many Faustian bargains for me to be comfortable with her.

First chance I really had to hear from him, and I was impressed.
Anybody know if the Democratic National web site has set up a Party Builder group for him yet? I'd like to get an Indiana Meet Up or Party Builder group going for him...
