Huh. Did you know that clove and other flavored cigarettes will be banned after midnight?
Menthols are still legal, but they're going to do a study to decide how to regulate them.
Starting Tuesday, cigarette manufacturers and retailers will be banned from making or selling candy-, spice- and fruit-flavored cigarettes owing to a provision in the new Tobacco Control Act.

Public-health advocates are optimistic that the new federal law could help reduce smoking rates nationwide, especially among youth.

But small-business owners — in particular, proprietors of cigarette shops — are frustrated about having to abide by another regulation.
...

"It's generally acknowledged that these types of flavors may be more attractive to kids and sort of help get them over the hump of the harshness of smoking until the addiction kicks in," says Joshua Sharfstein, FDA principal deputy commissioner. "So by taking away some of these fruity flavors, it will make cigarettes less appealing to the young."

And there are more rules coming. The rest of the act's restrictions won't go into effect until at least next year.

1. Well we do have to save people from themselves, and sadly dems are all for that
I didn't like it when fellow christians tried to save me from sinning, and don't like it when our side does it either.

It will just drive it underground, jack the prices up, start a whole new profitable wing of the black market, and get people killed over it.

18. Nobody with a brain wants to do that
but making them less attractive to stupid middle school kids through taxation, restrictions, and having them taste like nasty old tobacco instead of candy is a good idea.

Keeping the air clean in enclosed public spaces is also a good idea.

However, I want to keep them legal.

I would not consider the taste of them- a step in getting over any hump.
They're nasty and expensive. I don't think too many kids are starting off on them.

10. Oh no? That's exactly what I did.
I started smoking clove cigs (Jakarta, non-filters). Got hooked to the point of smoking a pack (of 10) a day. Deciding that was too expensive and also knowing that clove cigarettes will wreck you way more than normal cigs, I switched to menthols because they were the most pungent. That was 20 years ago. I now smoke the cheapest "Light" cig out there.

Pathetic, huh? Well, it all started with cloves.

14. When I was in high school...
... and a freshman in college I would always keep a pack of cloves handy to corrupt all the young and innocent lungs around me. I tried to make sure that was as many people's first cig they ever smoked just so I could watch them get sick. I'd always say "C'mon, they smell like tea. How bad could it be?" and the next thing you know they'd lost all color in their face and needed to sit down.

25. Used to work with a gent who smoked clove cigs. The smoke almost killed me
Throat would close down, which was probably good, as the smoke also made my heart race right off. Damned near needed to be taken to the ER every day when he lit up. Not a good thing to deal with at work, back in the day when non-smokers just had to deal with second hand poison in the work place.

His wife/business partner finally told him the damned things had to go or he had to go.

37. Yeah, well, I French-inhaled 'em non-stop. never once got sick.
It was the cost that got me to switch to menthols. I really wish I would have gotten sick from them because they started me on a lifelong battle with cigarettes that continues to this day.

I just read a great piece about him in Salon. He smoked clove cigarettes.

30. LOL !!! - That Reminds Me...
Speaking of Tequila...

Here's a recipe for ya:

1) Get one of these (Has to be one of these, for the bottle)

2) Drink until empty... not all at once... maybe\maybe not...

3) Wash and dry bottle.

4) Get one of these (but not for smoking)...

5) And one of these (100 Proof works best)...

6) Insert herbal matter (don't be chincy, a good 4 to 5 incher should do) into cleaned out Tequila bottle.

7) Pour 100 proof Vodka into Tequila bottle until just about full.

8) Cap Tequila bottle and let sit for a week or two (if you can, LOL)

9) When Vodka has turned a lovely greenish color, and when the herbal matter looks bleached and skeletal when you pull it out, your concoction is ready for your enjoyment.

10) Call WillyT on the phone and tell him to get his ass over to your house, pronto!!!

:hi:

Seriously... if you do this, give me a call...

19. Dumbasses
This will not change anyone's smoking habits, nor will it reduce the number of smokers. Instead, it will create a black market for flavored tobacco products.

When states started raising the tax rates sky high on packs of cigarettes, people simply started importing them from overseas. They'll do the same thing with flavored cigarettes.

20. It is really easy to grow your own tobacco in the southern 2/3rds of the US. I have
for three years now. All I buy are cig tubes at $2.70 per carton. I have a pipe so I could do away with that expense as well. Same with beverages. I got 10 gallons of cider fermenting in the basement and several cases of home brew and homemade wine to tide me over. I could make hard liqueur but that would be illegal without BATF approval. }(

I'm not paying any taxes at all (sorry schip kids/feds/state) - you killed the goose that lays the golden eggs.

It really is easy to do these things - lots of information on the net. Think not only about the amount of $ you will save (could be thousands) but also that you know exactly what you are consuming. It is a fun hobby too.

I panicked reading that article until I saw that mini cigars are spared. So my Al Capone Sweets are safe! Whew!

As for Hot Topic, well, South Park dealt with that pretty well.

I will miss the smell of cloves outside of clubs (nostalgia) but honestly those things are pretty awful. As much as I bristle at nanny state, those flavored cigs are pretty much meant to snag children.
