'Father of Neoconservatism' Irving Kristol's Forgotten Alliance With Anti-Semites

In the hagiographic obits that have followed his death, the story of one of Kristol's most momentous -- and cynical -- maneuvers has been conveniently forgotten.




By the time Irving Kristol died on September 18 at the age of 89, he had transformed the Republican Party through the neoconservative philosophy he helped pioneer. A former Trotskyist, Kristol promoted the supply-side economic theories that formed the foundation of the Reagan administration's domestic agenda. At the same time, he tapped industry trade groups and right-wing sugardaddies for massive donations, enabling the birth of an apparatus of conservative think tanks that would provide the future Republican Congress of Gingrich and DeLay, and the George W. Bush White House, with their policy blueprint.

These highlights of Kristol's career have been detailed at length in the many obituaries about his death. But the story of one of Kristol's most momentous -- and cynical -- maneuvers, the brokering of a tactical alliance between Jewish neoconservatives and openly anti-Semitic evangelicals, has been generally omitted.

In my book, Republican Gomorrah: Inside The Movement That Shattered The Party, I describe how Kristol initiated the alliance in July 1984, urging that American Jews, "enmeshed in the liberal time warp," ally with Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority.

Kristol's apologia was inspired by the anti-Semitic ravings of a preacher named Bailey Smith. "I don't know why God chose the Jews," Smith had said. "They have such funny noses." When Jewish groups pounced on those remarks and on those of Jerry Falwell, who told his followers that Jews "can make more money accidentally than you can on purpose," Kristol rushed to the preachers' defense. .............(more)

Irving Kristol Connections

In 1953 Irving Kristol founded and was editor of the magazine "Encounter" in England, which was secretly supported by the CIA. It ran articles for Fabian Socialist and Bilderberger Huge Gaitskell, head of the Labor Party. 15 Irving co-founded, in 1965, with Daniel Bell, (CFR) "The Public Interest." Magazine. 16 This was a publication of "Freedom House.", which has received major support from The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation and has such as Jeane J. Kirkpatrick as a trustee and CNP's Alan P. Dye .

Kristol was co-founder of Coalition for a Democratic Majority (CDM) who also has Kirkpatrick as a member. 17

Freedom House was run by George Field who was chairman of the Rand School for Social Science owned by the American Socialist Society. 18

Daniel Bell, Kristols partner, also belonged to the Young Socialist League 19 and was a director for the League for Industrial Democracy , which was the American equivalent of the Fabian Society. Previous to 1921, it was named the Intercollegiate Socialist Society, 20 it's goals to advance the ideas of Marxism. Upton Sinclair and Jack London founded ISS in 1905 and Upton later founded the American Civil Liberties Union of California. Among the activities pursued by the League were research, lecture and information services, and development of plans for increasing social control. Jeane Kirkpatrick's name was on the letterhead of the League for Industrial Democracy until recently.

Intercollegiate Socialist Society, as stated, was organized by Upton Sinclair, Jack London and also Clarence Darrow, John Dewey and others. It's permanent headquarters was at the Rand School of Social Science in 1908, with the name changed to League for Industrial Democracy, and whose 1935 president was John Dewey. 21

Like Kristol, Danel Bell was subsidized by the CIA through the Congress for Cultural Freedom of which Bell was a leader. Irving Kristol's partner Daniel Bell has suggested that we do away with state boundaries and most local government. That is not surprising since he was a member of the Institute for American Democracy, an offshoot of the Anti Defamation League (ADL). 22

Kristol also co-founded Institute for Educational Affairs with William E. Simon in 1978, "financial resources directed toward sympathetic scholars and the research projects of think tanks." According to John Saloma, the Institute for Educational Affairs has dispensed more than $2.5 million in grants to academics since 1979. 23

CNP's William Simon was chairman of the Nicaraguan Freedom Fund. He is or was on the board of AmeriCares and is a longtime member of the Knights of Malta, both of which were a part of the Nicaraguan contra supply network. 24 Former Chairman, AmeriCares Advisory Committee (1982-1995) which also included, J. Peter Grace, William E. Simon (CFR), Treasury Secretary under Richard Nixon; Ambassador-At-Large is Barbara Bush; Honorary Chair of AmeriCares is Zbigniew Brzezinski (BB/CFR/TC); other Advisory Committee members, Prescott S. Bush, Jr., brother to former Pres. George Bush (CFR), Gen. Colin L. Powell (ret.) 33º Mason (CFR) and Sol M. Linowitz (CFR/TC), chairman of Xerox Corp. and officer of the World Future Society. 25
