Translating Conservativespeak: Freedom, Liberty and the Liberal Elite |
|
For the past six years George W. Bush has had a way with words. He has created an interesting conception of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqxmPjB0WSs">freedom and http://www.aclu.org/safefree/nsaspying/27379prs20061114.html">liberty. Liberals and progressives cringe when he uses these words, because we know what they really represent in the radical conservative lexicon is http://www.iraqbodycount.org/">death, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9287434/">destruction and http://www.aflcio.org/aboutus/thisistheaflcio/ecouncil/ec02272006e.cfm">exploitation. This has led many of us to proclaim what we have never proclaimed before: if this is http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/03/19/iraq.children/index.html">liberation, we don’t want to be liberated! My favorite author on political framing is George Lakoff. He is a genius when it comes to the linguistics of politics. Read Whose Freedom if you haven't already. My article wasn't really a linguistic analysis, so much as a quick break down of the insanity.
