Just how is a progressive politician supposed to deny being gay when they aren't gay? |
|
I admit to not knowing what it is like to be assumed to be gay when you aren't but I do know what it is like to dishonestly claim to be straight due to fear of being found out. Frankly representative Schakowsky is in an all but impossible position if Edmonds charges are untrue. She is in a liberal district and has a great record on gay rights. She surely doesn't want to go on record as believing being gay is bad. She could be outraged over the affair allegation without mentioning the lesbian aspect but frankly that is dangerous. If Edmonds is wrong here, and there is literally no evidence whatsoever backing her up, her behavior is nothing short of despicable. Edmonds clearly is wrong about several details of this alledged affair and blackmail. She was wrong about what precipitated the meeting between the women, she was wrong about where the meeting took place, to name two examples. Schakowsky deserves better than this. So do we.

"I'm not gay, you know--not that there's anything WRONG with being gay, of course."

6. She should just admit to the affair if it happened or deny it if it didn't. |
|
Truth will out. I think just addressing the affair accusation without focusing on the gender would do fine. It really shouldn't matter, as long as she is honest and not going to get caught in a lie.

Not a dig at the Big Dog, just a recent example of affair denial phraseology.

11. Just mention the husband |
|
Maybe something along the lines of "These allegations are categorically false. I am in a very loving relationship with my husband and always have been."
Reinforces heterosexuality and does nothing to disparage LGBTers.

15. What if she's really Bi and her husband knows but doesn't care? |
|
What if *he* has no problems with her having a relationship with another woman, but neither of them want anyone else to know? Maybe *they* don't consider it as her "having an affair", so she can deny having an "affair" and not be lying.
For the record, Jan Schakowski also proclaimed her husband's innocence in a fraud case... just a few months before he pleaded guilty to the charges and spent 5 months in prison. Her denial was more of an attack against Ms Edmonds, trying to equate her with birthers and conspiracy theorists.
Politicians lie... all the time... to cover their own asses.
just sayin'...

13. Sexual orientation is genetically determined. It's not Schakowsky's fault she's not gay |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 11:57 PM by glitch
or bi, if she's not. If she didn't have an affair then all she has to say is she didn't have an affair, period. If she did have an affair all she has to say is she had an affair and didn't allow anyone to blackmail her and influence her actions in Congress.
Anything else is nobody's business except her husband's, unless they have an open marriage, in that case anything else is nobody's business but her own.

14. What does being gay have to do with this??? |
|
First of all, a lot of people can have same sex affairs without being homosexual. Since Schakowsky comes from such a liberal district, I doubt if many will accuse her of being homosexual, and even so, what's the big deal? Thst would be a far bigger problem among right-wing conservatives.
The real story is whether congresspeople can so easily be blackmailed if they are afraid of disclosure of their personal affairs. Since Schakowsky is involved in overseeing intelligence matters, this is a particularly crucial question for our national security.
