Today Illinois Republican Congressmen Mark Kirk and Peter Roskam are going to call on the Census to cut its ties with SEIU because of its previous associations with ACORN. I think this whole guilt by association that the GOP is playing with ACORN and now SEIU is going to backfire on them big time.
1) SEIU is not going to take this lying down and unlike ACORN they have ridiculous political power.
2) As the ACORN thing shakes out I believe that those hanging the organization out to dry (including man Democrats) are going to have egg on their face.
From Illinois Leaders (warning its a wingnut website here in Illinois):
Roskam and Kirk to call for more ACORN/SEIU cutsMonday morning at 7:07 am CST, Congressman Peter Roskam will be on WLS 890AM, discussing the topic of a press conference scheduled for 11:30 am in downtown Chicago. Roskam and Congressman Mark Kirk will be calling for the US Census to break any ties with ACORN/SEIU. From Roskam's office:
In an effort to protect the integrity of the 2010 Census, U.S. Reps. Mark Kirk and Peter Roskam will call on the U.S. Census Bureau to terminate its partnerships with groups closely linked to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), including the Services Employees International Union (SEIU), which contributed $4 million to the group and shares an office with ACORN in Chicago.
The U.S. Census Bureau has formed hundreds of partnerships with organizations to help recruit workers for the 2010 Census and encourage participation. Following the release of undercover videos showing ACORN workers helping a fake pimp and prostitute illegally secure housing, the Census Bureau terminated its partnership with ACORN.
However, while the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to prohibit federal funding for ACORN and ACORN-related affiliates, the Census Bureau has only terminated its partnership with ACORN, leaving partnerships with groups like SEIU intact. According to National Public Radio, SEIU is ACORN's biggest union backer, giving more than $4 million to the community organization and its affiliates from 2006-2007 alone. One SEIU local union, the Illinois Homecare Workers and Home Childcare Providers, sprouted from ACORN's organizing efforts and pays rent to ACORN. SEIU national president Andy Stern serves on ACORN’s advisory council. According to his own Web site, ACORN Founder Wade Rathke is the “Founder and Chief Organizer” of SEIU Local 100.
In Illinois, SEIU Local 880 rents office space from the “Chicago Organizing and Support Center”, an ACORN affiliate, and both Local 880 and ACORN have offices at 209 W. Jackson Blvd in Chicago.
