GM TO SHUT DOWN SATURN AFTER PENSKE ENDS TALKS

DETROIT - General Motors Co. will shut down Saturn now that a deal with former race car driver and auto dealer magnate Roger Penske has collapsed, marking the end of a brand that was supposed to revolutionize the way small cars were built and sold in America.

"This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality," GM CEO Fritz Henderson said. He said Saturn and its dealership network will be phased out.

Early 1990s Saturn ad:

"Hi. We're new in town. We're very pleased to announce the opening of our newest Saturn showroom. And we'd like o invite you in for a visit - to show you some of the ways we're trying to change the automobile business. It's in the way we design our cars. And how we build them. And most of all, how very differently we take care of our customers - more like how you'd treat a new neighbor. (Which we are, we guess)."

1. I absolutely love my 1999 Saturn, one of the best cars I've ever owned. Still getting better MPG
than 98% of all cars on the road (averages 39.5 freeway/long distance and about 30 in town). Mine's going on 11 years old and has had no repairs, just normal maintenance.

Makes me sad that GM blew Saturn off and now they're gone.

4. I had a '92 Saturn SL1
that got around 40 mpg on the freeway too. Loved it. Too bad it got rear-ended by a big Ford F150 truck and totaled. But
it performed perfectly in the collision too. Even though the collision was at 20 mph, the crumplezones collapsed like they were
suppose to and I walked away unharmed.

3. '95 Saturn, bought used in '04
Still going strong and getting wonderful mileage. We fill it once every two weeks. (Although the ceiling liner rips at the drop of a hat, but c'est la vie).
