It was only a rumor ...
No tsunami warning for US West Coast

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has not issued a tsunami warning for California, Oregon, or Washington.

For the past two days emails have been circulating about a tsunami warning for the West Coast, but no such warning was issued by NOAA. There was a 7.7 earthquake in the Indian Ocean, that triggered a tsunami alert for that area, but no tsunami developed, and the advisory was cancelled on 30 September 2009 at 1016Z.

The Marine Operations Center for NOAA in Seattle does not have any idea where such a rumor came from or who might have started it.

Maybe enough to make a few people nervous?

2. There was an advisory issued for the entire coast on Tuesday afternoon.
It was widely broadcast on NOAA weather channels and by the Coast Guard. There was no need for a warning as it was predicted to be quite small with no shore encroachment, but possible dangers to people in the water or on the beach. In Southern California, they closed most of the beaches, but it occurred at night, so no one was really out anywhere.

I was on a boat in a harbor. We felt virtually nothing.

I say all of this only because I think it was all handled very appropriately.
