Also, most folks don't realize that there are serious gang problems in our prisons. The worst of the lot are generally shipped off to private prisons out of state.

The private prisons get to charge high dollar for the "worst of the offenders" - operating prisons is more profitable than hotels. You usually don't have to put the vacancy sign out and their rights don't really matter all that much, they don't vote.

As I have tried to tell the paraonoid "we are in a police state" crowd that posts on that other board I - a police state would have occurred under bush, when he was perverting the constitution or ignoring it all together.
