The Modern-Day Definition of a Career |
|
If you are directly responsible for money coming into an organization, then you have a career. Otherwise, you are a temp who will eventually be replaced either by technology or someone cheaper.
Your experience does not matter. Your skills do not matter. Your education does not matter. Your senority does not matter. The only thing that matters is whether you can bring in money to the organization.
That is all.

Oh, if people do bring in money, then they should be well rewarded for doing so. Isn't that part of capitalism? Or just a segue from a Looney Tunes cartoon?

Ask, for example, lawyers who have been directly responsible for bringing billable hours into their firm, but were let go anyway because they didn't meet quota. Or sales people whose sales figures were not high enough. People like that, too, are expendable.
It's not just whether or not you bring in money, it's whether you bring in ENOUGH money.

Billable hours are meaningless. What matters is bringing in clients that will pay. Salesman who bring in money are also valued.

What do you think big corporate lawyers spend the last three months of each year doing? Practicing law? It is to laugh. They're on the phone, dunning clients.

About a company that decided to cut expenses by firing the highest paid 25%(?) store employees. Problem: they were working on commission.

6. Your integrity does not matter |

I would add that to the list of qualities. In fact integrity could very well be detrimental to advancing your career.
