Hemingway or DemoTex? You be the judge.

Eight days and a wake-up.

Thanks to EarlG for allowing my dispatches in the DU GD Forum.

On edit: Spelling of Hemingway

14. I kept a copy of "Poets on the Peaks" on the lookout desk all season.
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 11:47 PM by DemoTex
It is really a lot more than an expensive coffee table ooh-ahh picture book. The photos are stunning, but I learned a whole lot about the three lookout poets (Kerouac, Snyder, and Whalen) from this great book.

It seems to me you have had a rather memorable summer.

10. Glad you asked so that I can post this:
Fire probabilities have dropped significantly in the last few days.
There was rain and snow Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; there are cold
temps and high RHs; and there was ground fog on the forest this
morning (RH=100%). The four cardinal fire weather indices (Spread
Component, Burn Index, Energy Release Component, and Ignition Component) are
way down, as are the KBDI (Keetch-Byram Drought Index) and the Haines
Index (2 today - very low). There is no LAL (Lightning Activity Level)
and the forecast is for a significant wetting event beginning
tomorrow.

To give you an idea of how much things have changed in the last week
or so, the USFS starts prescribed burns in the district today! We had
big smokes from the Sisters and the Pickles burns.

It looks more and more like a major snowstorm is coming to the higher
elevations (that would includes my location at 6400 feet). The snow is forecast to start Friday
evening and continue until Monday evening. That should make for some interesting photos.

15. Now that is one awesome report.
I understood most of that, but I'd not heard of the KBDI. So I learned something new, thanks. The increased humidity signals the end of fire season around this time each year but I hiked a few days ago near Mt. Adams in the Gifford Pinchot NF (southern Washington Cascades) and it was dry as hell with lots of fuel on the ground.

Snow at 6400' is a sure sign of winter. Looking forward to some pics.

25. It's been so interesting for us ...
Thanks for taking us along on this journey! I'm boarding a cruise ship on Sunday for a week so I'll look forward to your journal when I get back. We're in red flag down here in California. Just saw on the news a small fire on the Cajon Pass. Hope the winds don't whip it up. We've been pretty lucky so far ... hope it stays that way.

Enjoy your trip home and take pictures, will you? Give Nick a pat for me.
