1. Chicago didn't get the games because of a terrible movie?

32. I pretty much agree that it is time for South America to host, but we could have used the jobs...
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 11:23 AM by demodonkey

...Yes, so could Brazil use the jobs, but I'm rather inclined to root for our home team these days. We need to clean up our act, clean up our image, and help our own after the 8 years of hell.

2. Wasn't the IOC still pissed at Bush 43 for his bungling of Salt Lake 2002?
I seem to remember they objected to his attempts to politicize the whole thing, so they're taking out their frustration on the new guy.

19. I sincerely doubted it has anything to do with Bush
The US has hosted 3
No country from Latin American has ever hosted and Brazil will have hosted the World Cup just before the Olympics so the infrastructure will already be in place
Spain has already started building in what was going to be a bid to co-host the World Cup with Portugal that both parties decided to drop out of
Never-the-less Spain is still ahead of the game
There probably is a lot of support for giving Spain a consolation prize
As to politicizing the Olympics lots of countries do
You can blame Bush for a lot of things, but this isn't one of them

3. Easy answer: Oprah, Michelle and Obama.
They should have sent a more diverse delegation and the president should have stayed out of it.

33. The US is different.

The US is fighting multiple wars of aggression.

US financial practices have caused the worldwide financial meltdown.

The US is the world hegemon, and not greatly loved.

The overwhelming pressure exerted by the US was rightfully resented.

It is past time for Rio/South America to get a shot.

4. You might be partly correct - I think the IOC wants Rio because the games have been in SA before
So I think they will opt for having it in Rio.

23. In addition...
Brazil is hosting the '14 World Cup
Many of the venues will have already been built, so it's not as big a task

As to Madrid -- they had been planning to bid to joint host the World Cup with Portugal (a bid both parties have pulled out of). But they had begun building for the World Cup in order to improve their chances.
Much of the infrastructure is in place, or is in the mid-to-late stages of building

10. I don't think 9 months was enough to
over come 7 years of fake* cowboy diplomacy and running roughshod over the world. I blame

fake* because real cowboys would of never acted like that bunch.

13. What bothers me...
...is that this feels like a total slap-in-the-face rejection of not only Chicago--but America.

To be eliminated in the first round...is quite harsh.

I don't know why. Maybe there were good reasons. Or maybe the world just hates us.

25. CNN had a good spokesperson on ~ I just caught the end
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 10:55 AM by goclark
He said a country could have lost by 1 vote in the first round and that Chicago has nothing to be ashamed of ~

Those are not the exact words ~ he also said something like the American delegation probably called Pres. Obama to come at the last minute because they knew it was going to be close and the American team hoped that he could sway it but it was not to be.

I'm glad that America showed the world that Sports are important to us and that we will enjoy seeing the Games no matter where they are ~ :patriot:

26. Rio and Madrid have already begun building venues
Brazil is hosting the '14 World Cup
Spain had been planning a bid to joint host the cup with Portugal and had been building toward it
Plus the US has hosted at least 3 Olympic games in the last 30 years
Brazil and Spain -- Zilch
