5. I'm presuming that the date of the Summer Olympics that Chicago was vying
for would be the same date for Rio, which would be their winter.

18. And much better weather than Atlanta did for their Summer Games!
A lot of the athletes had problems with the heat and the humidity at the Atlanta Games, and so did a lot of the attendees. Since I am into horses, I heard more about them, and the equestrian teams planned far in advance for ways to make sure the horses were not adversely affected.

Rio during their "winter" would be much preferable.

Again, since I am into horses, I wonder how the possibility of disease might affect the horses. The Spanish Games had a problem with a disease normally carried by zebras and donkeys that was having a run in Spain at the time. The Atlanta Games had some newer varieties of Equine Encephalitis. I am not sure what could be in Brazil, if anything, but I am sure it will be a concern.

14. Sydney games were in late September.
I was referring to your assumption that the summer games need to be held during your summer.

Now name calling with profanity, still very American.

Madrid will win it anyway. Do not under estimate the level of corruption of the IOC. Samerach still holds power over most IOC members.

to a totally un-called-for attack on Americans. Any problem this person has with Americans can probably be found in Australia. So, I don't think the attack is fair. If this person wants to criticize Americans, then he/she can do so with a bit more tact.

I was meaning that our friend in Australia didn't read the rules.

Our Australian friend started the personal broad brush insult and then expects people to just sit there and take it.

This entire forum is dedicated to complaining about folks that don't agree with you. And I bet that most of them are Americans.

And FYI, I am an American. Spent 10 years in the US Marine Corps. I just haven't lived in the US in a few years and will probably never live there again.

31. Thank you for your service. My response stands that I was merely curious
about the timing of the Summer Games relevant to the southern hemisphere. Your comment was out of line. Never once during the creation of my OP did I consider my Americanism nor did it enter my mind that because I'm an American that I somehow feel privileged or better than anyone else.

As you can see in my post #21, I have conceded the sillyness of the question in my OP. It was just a thought I had and I asked it. Since there is no one here to bounce such a question off of, DU becomes my water cooler.

someone blaming an Australian who supports Rudd for the idiocy Howard wrought.

Or blaming a Canadian who supports NDP or Labour for Harper's nonsense.

That's black and white thinking and you should be smarter than that. You certainly act like you're smarter than us, anyway.

While you were hiding out in Australia pointing the finger and insulting your American brothers and sisters, those of us here at DU were actively working for advocacy, fighting to get the country back on the right track, protesting and working like hell to try and change things for the better.

We collectively apologize if it did not meet up to your approval or satisfaction.

21. I just went there in Google Earth. About 25° S. Which is the NH equivalent of
Miami. I guess that makes my OP a "stupid question". Apparently, I have proven that there are such things. It's just hard for me, as a northern hemisphere dweller, to relate to the opposites in the SH.

Doesn't water circle the drain in the opposite direction down there?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect

However Rio is very close to the equator and Coriolis effect is very weak the closer to the equator you are.

Although Coriolis effect is real it is very very very very small in a small amount of water like a bathtub or toiler. The reason water rotates clockwise in a toilet has very little to do with Coriolis effect. The water is simply inserted into the basin at an angle to assist with flushing.

Geometry of the container has much more influence on draining than Coriolis effect.

9. "Winter" is mid 70s to low 80s depending on the month.
I don't think the date is even set yet.

Likely if Rio gets it they will push for a date when weather will be in low 80s.

13. It sound like winter in Rio is nothing like we have here.
Winter vacations happen in July. Winter nights can be chilly, with the temperature dropping to around 15° C (around 70 F). Laugh if you live in a cold country, but the fact is that thermal comfort is completely relative. Wind and dampness could make you feel even colder, and the homes do not have a heating system. Cariocas like to joke saying phrases like "The winter of 97 happened on the night of June 9". But everybody keeps a good leather jacket or parka in the closet for eventualities. You may even need a hat and gloves at night, if you go to mountain resorts Off-Rio, like Mauá, Itatiaia or Penedo.

23. Winter in Rio is not what most people would consider winter.
Heck, the athletes probably would prefer it to 100F and 90% humidity like they could see in some places in summer.

25. Perhaps they will rationalize by saying the "summer" refers to the season in Greece,
or that events are traditionally summer-time sports, or something like that. If nothing else, the topic might educate a few people about how seasons work, and it will provide some fodder for insipid sports announcer 'humor'... :)

36. Well, they are summer games
It is subtle, but the games are of the nature (mostly) that you'd expect to play in summer, track, swimming, bicycling, soccer. Of course there are many other sports not so traditionally warm-weather associated, but that is because the Winter games started much later and have always been significantly smaller and have much more difficult logistical issues.

Rio is a fine choice, too bad that Chicago workers didn't get the jobs though.

37. Definitely. I didn't mean that to sound jokey - I really do think the
summer/winter distinction between the sports is a legitimate source of the name.

I'm willing to bet that Rio will put on a fine show, and I don't think South America has ever hosted so there's a certain geographical fairness...
