The universe is like a blank page, like a computer with no OS.
It is because there is nothing about it that would cause evil to fail or good to prosper, no outside force to serve justice or grant mercy, that we--as creatures who want justice and fairness and mercy for ourselves--must assiduously pursue these ideals, and work to build them like alabaster cities upon this bleak and morally flat tundra.

I personally believe in an impersonal creative energy underlying the universe, sort of like Brahman in Vedanta philosophy. I believe it's my (our) purpose in life to harmonize ourselves with that creative energy (for want of a better phrase).
Beyond that, I think it's up to us individually and collectively to define the Good and to create social processes, structures, and institutions to cultivate, promote, and sustain the Good. Being flawed beings, though, there is no guarantee that the Good will prevail or that Evil will be punished.
