What do we make of an unjust world...
in which evil deeds are routinely rewarded?

1. That people are far from perfect...
All the more so when they get into groups and small inequalities become magnified by other people, and by their environment.

2. That 'the flood' had an opposite impact on humanity than represented as human husbandry
on a Biblical scale

4. That the universe has no "moral shape" and is merely the stage on which we play out the drama...
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 02:05 PM by AlienGirl
The universe is like a blank page, like a computer with no OS.

It is because there is nothing about it that would cause evil to fail or good to prosper, no outside force to serve justice or grant mercy, that we--as creatures who want justice and fairness and mercy for ourselves--must assiduously pursue these ideals, and work to build them like alabaster cities upon this bleak and morally flat tundra.

7. I like your answer

I personally believe in an impersonal creative energy underlying the universe, sort of like Brahman in Vedanta philosophy. I believe it's my (our) purpose in life to harmonize ourselves with that creative energy (for want of a better phrase).

Beyond that, I think it's up to us individually and collectively to define the Good and to create social processes, structures, and institutions to cultivate, promote, and sustain the Good. Being flawed beings, though, there is no guarantee that the Good will prevail or that Evil will be punished.

5. We make the same as people have done, since people came to be.
You do the best with the world you are born into.
