2 real reasons Chicago did not get the Olympics
1. Not enough 911. If Obama had been more like bush he would have said something like:
"If we don't get the Olympics, then the terrorists who struck us on 9/11 will have won. They want you to pick another country because they hate our freedoms, pick Chicago or Osama wins."

2. Coaches, teams, families, etc coming here to US for the games can't afford to pay for health insurance and care here and did not understand the concept of having 50% or more of the cost of coming here would be for paying for private insurance. It is a foreign concept to them and they just can't wrap their minds around it and worry that anyone injured might not be able to get cared for....

:)

2. Coaches, teams, families, etc. coming here to US for games can't handle hassle of
1) No Fly List
2) The personal inspections to get on the plane
3) Being detained as a terrorist

Takes all the fun out of tourism, even for the Olympics.

3. lol
I wonder how many of our athletes will 'defect' to Brasil once they get a chance to drink in the city nightlife...

4. #2 is a good one. May I offer #3 and 4?
3. Difficulty getting through security. This isn't an easy country to get into and out of.

4. Wingnuts ranting about Obama being Hitler incarnate because he wants to provide health care to them. I would be afraid of attending a large venue event in that climate of lunacy as well.

11. Brazil
Unfortunately, Brazil´s right to bear arms is also specifically guaranteed in its constitution, and they have a very well-financed and effective, NRA-style lobbying agency, as well as a lively local arms manufacturing industry. Their urban homicide rate would make we Americans blush. The police CANNOT enter the favelhas; it is understood that they will be immediately shot buy snipers if they attempt to do so. The municipality has been building high concrete ´transportation walls´(like those seen on the side of freeways in Los Angeles and other cities) around the perimeters of the favelhas.

7. Security doesn't seem to deter the people with work visas. From what
one reads, they seem to be everywhere.

6. How about "give the rest of the damned world a chance"
How many Olympic games have we had? How many do we DESERVE? We're something like 4% of the world's population, and there are MANY countries capable of hosting who never have. Much as we think we're the center of the damned universe, we're NOT.

There's also something beyond abject solipsism, and a little noblesse oblige would be in order.

Why does much of the rest of the world resent our sense of entitlement? To far too many here, it's a mystifying question. It must be because of our freedoms...
