I know it sounds corny, but breathing into a brown paper bag really works.

5. You know what, I had those a lot and finally took the step and started taking medication |
|
My life is soooooo much better now. 100% change. Anxiety attacks are an AWFUL feeling.
I know some may disagree, but it has made a difference for me.

6. It helps me to engage in a task which requires some concentration but isn't so important... |

...that it would stress me out--alphabetizing the jars in my spice cabinet, for example.
Hang in there!

7. They are bad, but thank godess they do subside. |
|
Had them so bad I became housebound for a couple years, then found a wonderful doc and xanax to take when I would feel a trigger that would bring on an attack. took about 8 months, but symptom free for about 15 years now.

I've had more than a few in the past couple of years and they are sheer hell. When I have them, I lose connection with everything and everyone and start whirling into an endless chasm of terror. The concept we've been sold of 'hell' is laughable and preferable compared to an actual panic attack. I hope you are okay, but know that others go through this shit too. You are not alone, in other words, even though you feel that way during the attack.

10. Madokie! - I have had a few friends who thought they were having panic attacks...I |
|
wondered if maybe they were experiencing "crashing blood sugar" (awful, awful feeling), and suggested they eat some protein and sit quietly for a little while...in all three cases, it turned out that the friends, indeed, had scarfed down some sugary treat on an empty stomach, which caused their blood sugar to (a) soar (feels good!) and then (b) crash. Shaking, weird, crazy, inside-out mucked up feeling...as it turns out, this was what they had done, and a shot of milk, slice of cheese/meat, nuts - any protein - brought their BS level up to "normal" in a short period of time...
I know about this 'cause I learned the hard way years ago that I don't DARE eat sugar on an empty stomach! Crashing BS is unbelievably scary - it's a misery no one understands till they've done it themselves - also, I have found that it gets more intense the older I get -
Anyway, I'm NOT discounting the possibility that you are in the throes of a true panic attack, my friend! - But this may be the cause, and maybe there's a quick fix (ie, "no sugar without a hit of protein before/after sugar"), and I send best wishes to you!! (with hopes that this is all it is!)

12. I know the feeling , had them since 1987 |
|
No matter what med or diet nothing helped . Zanex tamed them some but you can tell soon when you need to increase the dose and getting off zanex , man that was worst than the attacks.
I have tried everything and when one comes on it seems like hours to me.
I get mad and angry , I am tired of rubber legs and moving rooms and dizzy spells and running out of stores and always having to know where the exits are for a quick escape.
I've even got to the point of saying to myself go ahead then kill me I'm not afraid but even that has not helped.
I still wake up with them at times and try to read , turn all the lights on and the TV.

14. I'm with you...they are hell. I found that (and this sounds funny, but it's true) stroking my belly |
|
lightly helped. The other thing I always kept telling myself was that it would pass, I wasn't dying (even though my brain was saying, "What if THIS TIME YOU ARE DYING?"), and that afterwards I would have the best sleep ever. Panic attacks always made me sleep well, once they were done.

15. Try to remember, it's physical. |
|
Vietnam put us in a situation where our bodies operated at mind blowing, high stress levels for months at a time. So now, when you have a stress reaction, you get the full blown, supercharged, 4.5 second drag racer version for even the smallest stress situations. It can last for days or weeks after the situation is over because your body is always expecting more.
Your body learned how to act at an age that set you up for the rest of your life.
