CBS employee charged with Letterman extortion plot
Source: Newsday

NEW YORK (AP) — A CBS News employee has been indicted in an extortion plot against David Letterman, who acknowledged sexual relationships with female staffers on his show after the man tried to blackmail him for $2 million, the Manhattan district attorney said Friday.

Robert J. "Joe" Halderman, a producer for the true-crime show "48 Hours," was arrested Thursday and indicted on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny, punishable by five to 15 years upon conviction, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

1. "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time... don't do it!"
You can't make this stuff up -- a producer for a true-crime show gets arrested for blackmail....

2. I can't figure out why someone in his position would try this.
I would think he must have made some decent money as a producer for a prime time show on a major network. The dude must have some expensive habits.

5. Or he felt like he was getting vengeance for his girlfriend...
Or it was the child support that he owed. There are a ton of speculations that can be made. Will be interesting to see the details.

6. Halderman is the extortionist, not Haldeman the presidential aide/crook.

But if you post a story in LBN that is 25 hours old, then you can be disallowed your OP.

it has to be within 24 hours of its first release.

13. Good. What I like best about the whole ugly mess is that Letterman showed he won't be blackmailed...

He'll out his own dirty laundry before he lets you control him. There's respect deserved in that, imo.

14. How much does a veteran CBS producer make?
Halderman's salary had to be at least a million a year.
what did he do with all that money? lose it all in some Bernie Madoff style ponzi scheme?

15. Think I saw article that had his salary at around $200,000??
It also talked about his child support payments (around $6,000/month) and other non-custodial parental stuff like maintaining insurance, splitting medical bills, etc...still absolutely NO excuse for doing what he tried to do.
Hope he gets a long jail sentence. They should have kept his ass in jail instead of just giving him a "stay away from David Letterman" order. Ya think they would at least put an electric ankle monitor or something on him.

16. Thanks
I thought it was funny how he actually accepted a personal check for 2 million and tried to deposit it.
why didn't he demand cash or at least a cashier's check? maybe a money order or something. CBS could make a new episode of America's Dumbest Criminals out of this lol.
