GOP aides say probes to decide Ensign fate
By Alexander Bolton - 10/02/09 01:11 PM ET

Senior Republican aides say Sen. John Ensign’s (R-Nev.) political future will depend on what actions the Senate Ethics Committee or the Justice Department may take against the lawmaker.

A senior GOP aide said that if the Senate Ethics Committee was not already investigating Ensign, it would be certain to launch a probe now.

The aide said that Ensign would have to answer the new allegations himself.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declined to comment about Ensign’s political future during a Friday morning news conference. The session was supposed to be devoted to healthcare reform, but questions soon turned to Ensign.

“I really don’t have any observations to make about the Ensign matter,” McConnell said, reiterating his position after reporters barraged him with persistent questioning. “I don’t think today is a day to make any observations about the matter — it just appeared in the newspaper today.”

8. Did you hear KO last night?
He was chatting with Rachel at the end of his program and said Ensign got too close to the Hamptons. Rachel's 'Ewwwww I don't want to think about that' was hilarious

6. He very well may be on his way out.
He's not being defended by the Minority Leader. He's embroiled in a scandal that left a paper trail, and every time this issue comes back up it leaves a bit more tarnish on the Republicans.

I will not be surprised to see him kicked to the curb before the 2010 election cycle.

9. Chinless Mitch doesn't want to talk about it?
Gee, he certainly seems pretty forthright when there's trash to be talked about Democrats. Now it's one of his charges, and Mitch develops lockjaw. The most dangerous place to be in Washington is between Sen. McConnell and a camera. Except now.

10. Senators stick together
they will never convict one of their own for anything. Ensign doesn't have anything to worry about.
