Calif. attorney general launches ACORN probe

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California Attorney General Jerry Brown on Thursday said he is investigating the community organizing group ACORN in response to a request from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In a letter to the governor, Brown's office said it would look into the group that has come under fire in recent videos produced by conservative activists.

Employees at ACORN offices in San Bernardino and San Diego were caught on camera appearing to advise a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute to lie about the woman's profession to get financial help for housing and about how to smuggle girls into the country.

The state will also look into the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped, said Scott Gerber, a spokesman for Brown.

Amy Schur, head organizer for California ACORN, said the group is cooperating with state investigators and has handed over staff policy and procedure documents and other information.

"We're absolutely cooperating and will continue to provide any information that's helpful since we're confident that we've committed no crimes," Schur said.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, sent a letter to Brown, a Democrat, last month requesting the investigation.

"I am outraged and deeply concerned by these allegations. If these reports are true, they warrant prosecution under the fullest extent of the law," Schwarzenegger said in a statement Thursday praising Brown for examining the issue.

and prove that most of their work is above board. too bad they don't investigate war profiteers like KRB and Halliburton.

it's a politically motivated witchhunt...and class warfare, with a big dose of racism thrown in. why am i wasting my time discussing this with someone who calls a missing 9 billion dollars spin?
:nuke: enjoy your stay

I suspect this investigation is going to backfire on certain pretender-panderers.

5. Ah, Jerry Brown.
A WHOLE lot of CA DUers are peeing their pants in excitement that this guy is running for guv. Me? Not so much. I'm old enough to have experienced his first governorship and I wasn't impressed then either. He recently deferred to Ahnie the choice of putting Chuck Poochigian (R) on the Court of Appeals. Just a note, Chuck Poochigian (R-Homophobe) was deemed UNQUALIFIED by the California State Bar and Jerry Brown didn't so much as blink. Honest to goddess I'M SICK of these shit career politicians! We need new blood!

8. I recall the California budget being in good shape
when Jerry Brown was Governor (based upon news reports at the time, those might have been biased). While the legislature is the budget, I always thought it also reflected very well on Jerry Brown's administration.

9. Good!
If anyone can oversee a fair investigation, it is Jerry Brown. Furthermore, he will also look into the people who did the taping.

15. Is Arnold stupid or just ignorant?
Of course the Dems handed the Republicans a weapon when THEY refused to investigate before jumping on Karl Rove's bandwagon which for decades has been targeting those who help the poor.

The state will also look into the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped, said Scott Gerber, a spokesman for Brown.

Also??? The ACORN worker taped without his knowledge, iow, the law WAS broken, by O'Keefe and Giles, was libeled and smeared and as a result, lost his job and it is THEY who need to be investigated in this case.

Juan Carlos Vera did not offer advice to help these too crooks bring underage girls into the country for prostitution purposes. He did the opposite, and there is absolutely nothing on the tape to support that allegation. Not only that, he contacted the police, and even on the tape (even the edited version) he offered to call the police, informed these two rightwing wackos that he worked with Dist. Attorneys, and it was THEY who refused to work with the police.

This entire episode in California was a violation of the law and it was ACORN who was victimized by the law-breakers. So, why, when any amateur detective who knows how to google, has already figured that out, is there an investigation to the victims of the crime?

I hope Jerry Brown is not the typical Democratic who cannot wait to let the wacko fringes of the right know that he will be a good boy and do as they wish so they won't call him names anymore!
