It's beyond disgusting. I really don't know what to do or think anymore. The GOP and its cronies have finally stooped to an all-time low.

when you're already limboing under a thimball.

I would have been more shocked had they said "nice try" or didn't say anything. Their responses were predictable.

26. The only wrong with that is, Obama made this his baby
And it's hard to cheer when his and Michelle's hard work didn't come to fruition.

And unlike chicago politics, they don't work their corryuption to the betterment. At least in ChiTown, things get done.

3. *sigh* I have some issues with the olympics....
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 07:06 PM by lightningandsnow
For example, I have a really big issue with the Vancouver 2010 games in that they are being held on unceded Coast Salish territory, and still appropriate native Canadian imagery in really tacky ways. Also, the whole thing about trying to keep sex workers and homeless people out of sight - not cool.

Yeah, it's a tangent. But I'm just saying.

And the right-wingers are assholes. No argument there.

This will be the first time for Olympics on that continent.

It was a great choice.

As for our loss, I can't say I'm a bit surprised.

6. Because every single thing in this country is hyper political thanks to the MSM and Rethugs.
President wants to talk to kids in school? It becomes a circus. President wants to appeal to IOC for the Olympic Games in his hometown? It is turned into some very important political moment that is totally not political. The 20%ers rule the media and it is a joke.

13. It would have meant tens of thousands of jobs in Spain.
The economy in Spain right now is teetering on the edge of collapse. Unemployment is in the twenties.

They are in the worst economic shape since the Civil War.

I can see why it was a painful loss to them.

And you're an idiot.

20. Spain is doing something wrong then. Seriously.
Spain is a romantic notion for those of us who have never been there. We also might have some odd ideas of what Spain is like. But mostly, I can't recall ever seeing a commercial encouraging me to visit Spain or giving me an idea of what it might cost. Jamaica runs ads. Aruba runs ads. Mexico runs ads. The Bahamas runs ads. Where is Spain?

29. Spain never built up their economy like what Germany or France did.
Unlike those two, Spain lacks a very large manufacturing sector or a technology sector comparable in size. That's not to say that they are non-existent in Spain because they do exist.

Tourism would be their best way forward, IMHO. Make Madrid into a destination as traveled as Paris or Rome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_rankings

Give me a break. Spain and Ireland had been two of the hottest economies before The Crisis struck. Madrid already has tons of great hotels and sites to see. Spain also boasts the best beaches and cuisine. Everybody should visit Seville and Barcelona if they get a chance.

34. Because Spain is in Europe. You also don't see such commercials encouraging to travel to other
Western European countries.
Aruba, Jamaica and Mexico are closer and more likely to offer package deals through crappy resorts.
Most of Spain's tourism comes from other European countries, mainly the Germany or the UK.

Personally, I have never understood the appeal of hosting them anyways. Spending billions of dollars so people can play games?!?!? I'd rather see the Olympic budget spent on NASA.

42. If the jobs are not there today, then jobs that don't materialize to
support something in the future are not lost jobs.

Shutting down a factory today is lost jobs. Not building a skating rink several years from now is not.

16. People were cheering in Chicago too.
Not tea-baggers or repukes. Just regular people who were thinking, "We can't afford this" and worried about what it would do to our city that's already in trouble beneath the glittering surface. Who didn't want more schools and neighborhoods and hospitals and services sacrificed to Daley's ego.

There are people who are sad, too. It would have been fun, sure. It would have led to a a boom in construction and tourism and that would have put a lot of people to work at least in the short term. There were always pros and cons. Only about half the city's people really supported it.

When I saw a GIGANTIC crowd in Rio gathered to hear the results, and going nuts with joy when they were announced, I realized that Rio just simply wanted it a hell of a lot more. I'm happy for them.

I never in my wildest dreams thought that this was a loss for Obama. Really, where do they come up with this shite? Some of these neo-con lovi'n bigots, remind me of little children watching as the bully is stealing candy from another kid and they're all cheering him on. I'm just talking about the mindset.

I'm glad it's going to Rio, since it's a first for South America. It would have been lovely in Spain, also. Spain is such a beautiful country.

19. The way the repukes and conservatives cheered is disgusting.
But it's not un American and unpatriotic to not be upset that the US did not get the games. We've had plenty of games...let's spread the wealth. I am happy that South America will be hosting the Games for the first time ever. Congrats to them.

Yes, it means we potentially lost a lot of jobs. But we can't base our economic future on whether or not we may or may not get an event. If we are, then we're in more trouble than I thought. It would've been nice to get them, but we didn't. There's nothing wrong with it.

37. Would holding the Olympics in Chicago have been good for people?
Edited on Sat Oct-03-09 05:26 AM by eomer
Would it have been good for poor people, for homeless people, or even for regular working people? I had never thought about it until I listened to this segment of Democracy Now!:

http://www.democracynow.org/2009/10/2/sportswriter_dave_zirin_on_obamas_olympic

I'm not saying I know the answer -- just that it seems to be a good question.

Maybe the Republicans' cheering and Democrats' lamentations are both counter to the interests of their respective members.

40. There are people in cities that hosted previous olympics who
think having the games didn't work out as planned. The 'afterglow' faded, and they are stuck with underutilized or vacant venues, plus a lingering debt.
