Eight More Have Died
8 US troops die in attack on remote Afghan outpost
(AP) – 7 minutes ago

KABUL — The military says eight American soldiers and two Afghans were killed in an attack on two outposts in remote eastern Afghanistan.

The military statement Sunday said a tribal militia launched the attack from a mosque and a nearby village in Nuristan, one of the most dangerous regions of Afghanistan. The Americans and Afghans repelled Saturday's attack and "inflicted heavy enemy casualties."

In the U.S. statement, Col. Randy George, described it as "a complex attack in a difficult area."

The Taliban have claimed responsibility.

3. God keep them.
I hope that what they, and all of the others, have died for turns out to be this: an omnipresent and eternal "Why?" amongst us who sent them.

9. denying terrorists a sanctuary and control of vast fields of opium poppies
which will be used to make heroin which will be sold in order to finance continued opertaions against us, our allies, and our interests. Just a guess.

10. The illegal profits from opium poppies could be ended in a single afternoon..
Legalize and regulate, just like with alcohol.

But that would cut off the cash flow to other organizations which benefit from the drug war.

11. didn't the taliban have the poppy fields almost wiped out at one point?
But now the opium and heroin is pouring into American and european cities faster than ever....that should tell us something right there.

12. Wipe out production in one place and it just shifts to somewhere else..
We've seen it with alcohol, cannabis, cocaine and opium.

There is really only one way to end the black market in drugs, legalize and regulate them.

16. The majority of the heroin consumed in the United States comes from Mexico and Colombia.
or so I have read. Opium production has increased dramitically in Afghanistan over the past several years. One can derive a number of possible conclusions from this. My fear would be that anti-American entities would gain control of a major portion of the global heroin trade. Asides from generally empowering them, this would also give them something significant to offer the Cartels in Mexico who move across the US/Mexico border relatively easily. It seems to me that the one thing the Cartels want is product and/or money and the one thing a terrorist organization wants is the ability to enter and leave our country with impunity assuch America can not let Al Queida control the Poppy fields as we can not allow such a partnership to exist.

and, even if America did it, the rest of the world won't so the ilicit market will always be there.

8. It's not that I don't think we could do helpful things there, it's just that we're
totally fucking up our opportunity to do helpful things here.

There may still be a way to do the right thing. What we are doing now is not it.
