Girl raises money to buy a flagpole
Jackie Megee can be as chatty as any fifth-grade girl, but her ad on Craigslist went straight to the point:

“We want to buy a big flagpole.”

The other part of the “we” was her father, but Marvin Megee says this was Jackie’s thing. The 11-year-old had noticed that when the wind blew from the north, the flag at Greenwood City Hall draped onto the roof.

She didn’t like that. And she was spunky enough to do something about it.

By the time she was done, she would make grown men cry. People would talk about her on the other side of the world. She would get a key to the city, an offer of a college scholarship and she would unite, for awhile at least, a small town famous for its bickering.

I was struck by this comment posted following the story:

It is nice to see Conservatives raise good children. A liberal's kid would have placed an ad for lighter fluid so they could burn the flag. Thank God Conservatives are making more kids than liberals these days. It is hard to make kids when you are either gay, or so angry that nobody will marry you.

2. They just are too stoopid to realize we are the true patriots
we don't want THEIR sons and daughter to die in unnecessary wars.

3. Gee, what does the conservative responder think of unwedded childbirths?
That explanation should be a laugh riot...

Strange he didn't think of that at the time, but it's all good.

4. Odd. Why does the commenter think she is conservative?
Granted, the symbolism surrounding her family is USUALLY attributed to "being conservative" -- love of flag and country, honoring veterans -- but then she's doing things that are USUALLY attributed to "being liberal" -- helping feed homeless people, using an environmental argument to market her recycling business. The article mentions nothing about political leanings of the family. She clearly is just a great kid.

The commenter is clearly a turdhead. Oh wait, I can't say that -- that would be an unfounded assumption, kind of like assuming flag-wavers are conservatives and liberals are all gay and angry.

7. That pocket is a pretty conservative area
Being from this area, I wondered if she was from a conservative family as I read the article. But no, you are correct, there is no clue that she is a child of a right wing family in the article.

That being said, you have to admit there are certainly other ways she could have spent her money that would have truly been helpful. A flagpole seems kind of silly. But maybe that's just me.

8. Because a liberal would have more wisely spent the money!
There are hungry people out there that need food more than a useless flagpole.

She sounds like a spoiled brat.

She did a nice thing. And I wouldn't have even posted this but for that stupid comment bashing liberals.

15. And you sound like you have a stick up your ass
A kid puts together a program to help improve some small aspect of her community and you say she's a spoiled brat?

The real spoiled brats her age sit around playing video games all day and whine loudly when mom and dad don't bring the snacks quickly enough.
