4. Other.
Mostly yes, but at the same time I reject the skepticism of Homeschooling just because the Fundies use and and because of BS arguments about "socialization".

5. Broadly speaking
in the UK its called Parental Choice - an expression which is only really used in connection with schools.

It does however remain up to the schools who they accept. For the avoidance of doubt these are state schools.

Obama made his rightwing views clear on this during the primary and general election. I assumed everyone was paying attention.

29. Do you honestly not remember -
that he spoke in favor of charter schools and vouchers. He talked about reviewing all options for schools. He referenced the success in Chicago. What did you think he was talking about?

I don't even have children but I understood what his position was. Why did I notice - I pay property taxes and I don't mind paying those taxes as long as it goes to public schools. I didn't like where he was headed with diverting funds.

What's with the insult about intoxication?

7. Keep the money-changers out of the schools
Schools are one of the MANY areas where profit does not mean "improvement".

Good education already pays benefits to society.

Profiting off schools will lead to degradation of education, though endless "efficiencies" that add NOTHING to improvement of academics.

8. madfloridian has been responsible for some of the best threads on DU since I got here.
Particularly with regards to issues like the fundamentalist right wing and religious indoctrination in schools.

I vote "yes".

11. What I see is even more segregation but by class and not based on race...
Think about the cars being described today. You can, if you are pretty well off, afford a Mercedes that has all sorts of nifty safety devices to keep you and your family safe while traveling.

A bit lower on the scale would be those cars in the mid-range, I don't pay that much attention to brands anymore, but these automobiles are built sturdy and have good safety devices but not anywhere near what the Mercedes has. These cars will help you survive but you will more than likely, have injuries.

Then there is the bottom where cars such as the Yugo or the Pinto offer transpiration and little else.

I think if these people have their way, the schools would fall out like this. There would be public vouchers based on a per capita amount. Everyone would get one for each child of school age. Now if you were going to a prep school, your voucher could be given to that school and then you would ad the extra cash in order to help perpetuate your and off springs standing in the economic strata.

Next would be the middle class where they would be able to kick in a bit more in order to get a higher quality education.

Of course the kids with the misfortune to have been born into the lower class. Well, let's just say these poor unfortunates would have access to a base education with the only chance available for class mobility would be chance or an athletic or entertainment career.

A. They don't make Yugo's or Pinto's anymore; and,
B. Just because someone has a lot of money, doesn't mean they'll buy a foreign luxury car. If I was rich, I'd have my regular (American) car for driving and purchase an expensive antique American car for sunny days, parades and fun.

18. NO. Choice used to mean 'integration,'
which many ran from. NOW, in a new world, Choice provides options and opportunity for those in underfunded and unprivileged schools, public or private, to find desirable schools for their families and communities.

34. I don't think that they are used as 'code words'
I think they are pretty open and straightforward about what they want.

At least all the people around me that talk about school choice - they do not try to hide that they are talking about privatization of schools. They want to be 'refunded' on their school taxes so they can choose who to pay instead. Some are into religious schools - others aren't - just want private schools.

Public schools are the great social leveler. Some people don't EVER want to play on a level field -- they MUST have an advantage over all those "little people". To them, that's The American Way.

I tend to believe that even people who can afford private schools should have to attend public schools at least part of the time to qualify for graduation. Otherwise they'll never even see what other people are like.
