1. Do you accomplish a reward, or are you rewarded one for accomplishments?

5. for the umpteenth time
“for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

that was the language of the nobel citation. it wasn't for ACCOMPLISHMENT. it was for EFFORT

10. effort may or may not
lead to accomplishment. one can make a noble (no pun intended) effort and fail. or achieve.

heck, sometimes one can make a candy half-ass effort and succeed.

the point is that the committee specifically referenced in this citation, that it was a recognition of his EFFORTS.

that is distinguished from accomplishments. two different things

14. i think they are making a powerful and important point
to wit

The previous President to Bush and i mean Al Gore won the Peace Prize. The imbecile bush stole the office and created wars and disaster. Then the President following the imbecile bush also wins a Peace Prize. I think that symbolism from an external group is very important.

22. How much effort can one make in 11 days?
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 04:12 PM by Statistical
That is the amount of time between the inauguration and when the nomination period ended.

It cheapens the award. If Obama gets us out of both wars, changed foreign policy to be more world centric, Cut the nuclear arsenal by 2/3rds, closed down unnecessary military bases around the world, and cut defense spending by 30% then I would think he deserved the award for his EFFORT over the course of 8 years. Hell even if he TRIED to do all that but only did HALF of it he would deserve the award.

Most people who receive the award has spent 20-30 years in their field. Obama got it for 11 days in office. That makes the award little more than a symbol and I think decades from now even Obama would have rather got the award after decades of effort (like Al Gore) rather than after 11 days in office.

6. i agree
even if obama was perfect, he's still the president and thus should be skewered by SNL. it's what they do.

do we really need to fact check and microanalyze a COMEDY ROUTINE?

9. SNL needs to be fair - comedy or not - and expecting
President Obama to fix everything in what 10 months after 8 years of repug obstruction and bullshit is stupid. Where was the scorecard when bush ws the usurper in office?

11. lots of their comedy is stupid
that's certainly true.

again, you are applying a political wonk metric to a comedy show. it's not a matter of what can reasonably be expected. it's just a matter of poking fun at somebody.

iow, lighten up francis.

13. for the past 5 years i get my news from comedy shows
they have more integrity and honesty than the mainstream media - which is now equivalent to the soviet propaganda machine at its most insidious.

17. it's insane to think you're getting real news from fox, cnn, cbs etc
i'm not proud of having to rely on comedy shows like the Daily Show and Colbert, but they're truthful and real.

unlike the bullshit on the so-called news programs that are right wing propaganda machines and a waste of time for thinking people.

23. i appreciate that.
it also puts you in the 1% of internet users who can actually apologize for something, instead of just denial and evasion.

i give u massive props.

fwiw, i LOVE the daily show, i just don't consider it a primary news source.

but the writing and delivery are brilliant.
