Obama to give $1.4 million Nobel prize to charity

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama will donate the $1.4 million cash award that comes with the Nobel Peace Prize to charity.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says it's likely that more than one charity will share the windfall.

Gibbs says the president has yet to decide which charities will benefit from the award, announced early Friday morning.

2. I think he should keep some of it.
Bush made millions from his cronies and has a lot more money than Obama will ever have.

7. But Obama has more class than Bush could ever dream of, and everyone knows it.
Besides, if Bush gave anything to charity (I don't know if he ever did, so correct me if I'm wrong), he would only give it to RW agendas like "Focus on the Family".

At least Obama can be trusted to give it to worthwhile charities.

11. Can he do that?
I wonder if there is some sort of conflict of interest for a sitting president to do that.

I also wonder if he would be able to use the money to set up his own charitable foundation, ala Carter and Clinton.

3. I hope he gives it to Acorn - you know the RW is going to howl no matter
what he does.

It's like Michelle said when interviewed about going to try for the Olympics - "they are going to complain no matter what we do, so we may as well try to do something rather than nothing"

18. Kiva.org is very similar to Heifer.org but not limited to agriculture
So it can encourage small businesses as well.

I'm pretty much planning to give gift certificates to one or the other for Christmas presents this year instead of giving things or gift certificates to for people to buy stuff. Although I have tried to give gift certificates to locally owned businesses (such as the native plants nursery and store here), it is still encouraging the Christmas consumerism crap.

A gift certificate to benefit such good causes fits the spirit of the Christian holiday more than more crap for those who don't need it.
