Sarah Palin's "best seller" status already looks a bit dubious.
I noticed an ad for Palin's book FREE on one of the freeper sites. It seems Newsmax has bulk purchased them and is giving them away with subscriptions. So when the righties get all crazy about the awesome new book and how great it's selling, remember where you usually find Coulter books and most stuff by Regenry -- in the Dollar bin, after all the bulk purchases have to be dumped from inventory.

6. 400 pages.
However, the type is large and the paragraphs short for the Freep's benefit, so it may be a fat sucker.

7. the freepers always buy up the books to make them best-sellers
They always do it with Ann Coulter's books. You will see them prominently displayed as bestsellers at Borders. The truth is that the conservative groups buy tons of copies to make it seem like the book sells well.

15. At Borders?
They are the most expensive bookstore in So Cal. Not only do they sell at full retail price, they often add ten percent. I have never seen a book worth buying there that was discounted. Only damaged books, after season leftovers, and, well, really sucky loser books. Tehe!!

13. Everything You Need To Know About Right-Wing "Best Sellers"

What You Should Know About Right Wing Best Sellers
By Jeralyn, Section Media
Posted on Thu Aug 07, 2003 at 08:00:51 PM EST

The Horse is back this week, with an expose of right-wing books that appear on best seller lists--check it out. If you doubt them, go to the New York Times list of best-selling Hardcover Nonfiction. Check out Book Number 4 this week. Catch the symbol (+) next at the end of the book's description. Then, scroll down to bottom where the symbol, referred to as a "dagger," is explained:

A dagger (+) indicates that some bookstores report receiving bulk orders.

So it's not Jane Q. Public buying up the books, one by one, hungry for the content. It's right-wing activist groups and speakers' bureaus buying en masse and then offering the books free to those who ask for it. Even Drudge on occasion has offered the book for free . Here's another such ad, from NewsMax. Here's one from Human Events.

Credit goes to Sidney Blumenthal for speaking out about this (scroll down,) and to the Times for making the distinction.

According to Mr. Blumenthal, evidence of the "vast right-wing conspiracy" once proclaimed by Hillary Clinton can be found on The New York Times Book Review's best-seller list. "What I think the key question is for AC and all these other right-wing writers is, why is there a dagger in the New York Times best-seller list next to their books?" Mr. Blumenthal said in reference to the small symbol that appears next to Treason, which rocketed to the top of the Times list. According to the fine print at the bottom of the Times list, the dagger denotes "that some bookstores report receiving bulk orders."

"That means that someone is buying their book in bulk to put them on the best-seller list. These are bogus best-sellers," Mr. Blumenthal told The Transom. "I want to know why won't come clean and explain which rich right-wing sugar daddies are putting her on the best-seller list."

So who's buying up all these books?

"I don't know. I don't even know if she knows, but I know she's benefiting, and I know that all the other right-wing authors whose books have no merit in any way, on substance or as fact, are simply being put on there through a well-organized campaign involving vast resources of money of wealthy Republicans," Mr. Blumenthal said. "AC is a phony best-seller."

14. How To Spam Reality
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 10:48 PM by ChoppinBroccoli
http://politicalirony.com/2008/09/10/how-to-spam-reality/

How to Spam Reality

We all know what “spam” is — the bulk email that fills our inbox with crap. Well, it looks like someone is doing the same thing to the New York Times bestseller list, using something called “bulk orders”.

Let’s say you write a book and you really want it to be on the bestseller lists, but sales are sluggish. If you have enough money, you can just buy lots of copies of your own book, to artificially inflate sales numbers. Since it is your book, you can even send the books you buy in bulk back to the booksellers and resell them again (and again), so it only costs you the retailer’s markup for each sale. If you’re lucky, increased (real) sales from being on bestseller lists might even make up for the cost of buying your way onto the lists.

For example, a former manager of a B. Dalton’s bookstore reports that people would come in and (paying cash) buy large quantities of books by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Later, new books would arrive from Hubbard’s publishing house, with B. Dalton price stickers already on the books. Hmmm.

When this practice became widespread, some bestseller lists started checking for bulk orders. If you look on the NY Times’ bestseller list, you will see a small “dagger” (†) following some of the titles, and in the fine print at the bottom of the list it says

A dagger (†) indicates that some bookstores report receiving bulk orders.

As a sign of how widespread this practice is, five of the top ten books on the current list have daggers! What makes this both political and ironic is which books have daggers:

■Book number two on this week’s list is “The Obama Nation”, by Jerome Corsi, who helped “swiftboat” John Kerry. It was number one last week.
■Number five is “The Case Against Barack Obama”, which calls Obama a “calculating extreme leftist”.
■At seven is “Fleeced: How Barack Obama, Media Mockery of Terrorist Threats, Liberals Who Want To Kill Talk Radio, The Do-Nothing Congress, Companies That Help Iran, And Washington Lobbyists For Foreign Governments Are Scamming Us… And What To Do About It”.
■Number eight is “The Limits of Power” that “argues that Americans are responsible for the country’s woes” and that you shouldn’t blame Bush.
■The only book with a dagger that is not political is a memoir by actress Tori Spelling — daughter of Aaron Spelling, who left his kids $500 million when he died.
That’s right (in more ways than one) — all but one of the books that have been spammed onto the bestseller lists are right-wing partisan books.

Interestingly, there are two political books in the NY Times’ top ten that do not have daggers:

■“The Way of the World” about “how the Bush administration manipulated evidence about Iraq”.
■“The Wrecking Crew” about “the deliberate mismanagement of Republican rule”.
All the right-wing books have daggers. None of the left-wing books have daggers (meaning that they actually earned their way legitimately onto the bestseller list). You can make your own conclusions about who is placing bulk orders for right-wing books.

Unfortunately, not all bestseller lists check for bulk orders. Even the NY Times list, which does check, gets reprinted in other newspapers and all over the Web, but without the daggers, so readers who buy a book because it has “been on the bestseller list for 5 weeks” are probably getting spammed without knowing it. For example, the largest bookseller in the world, Amazon.com, shows the NY Times bestseller list, but without any daggers or other indication of bulk orders.

19. I was at Borders last night
And found several copies of Corsi's "masterpiece" “The Obama Nation” for $2.99 on the bargain rack.

It is still more expensive than toilet paper.

16. It's cheap propaganda, really
Buy up a few thousand books at $25 a throw, and for less than the cost of a modest advertising campaign, you get to send the author around to the various talk shows and book sales venues as "best-selling author of the #1 book in the New York Times." The books? Who cares? Give 'em away to suckers who will give you their personal information so you can milk the suckers like a dairy cow. Which replenishes the coffers of the fluffers, which in turn enables them to bulk buy the next hunk of pulp.
