The economy must be starting to show signs of life |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 09:59 PM by nadinbrzezinski
purely anecdotal, but we went to bike on the board walk today in San Diego. It was the we finally got the second bike for hubby... off season so we can save some money on a good bike. So we went to enjoy the day, and the view and biked around and worked a good appetite. So we wanted to get some lunch. The first place we stopped at, well it was full. The few others again, full. Later on we decided to go to an old stand by in Old Town San Diego, the Old Town Cafe... which was fairly packed... again this is the off season for touristy things, and parking was all but easy.
This is the off season. It may have to do with Oktoberfest at the board walk but nothing like that at Old Town Cafe... or the economy is starting to show some signs of life.
Oh we also took a catalog for front line property... now talk about pricey properties... egads... On the bright side, the floor plans are good reference and usable in RPGs.

6. Sorry. Couldn't resist. |
|
And I agree. I went out to the new mall today and couldn't find a parking place. Had to wait for a table at a restaurant, in the middle of the afternoon.
Things do indeed appear to be getting better.

3. Alaska Permanent Fund Dividends were issued a couple of days ago |

$1300.00 ea. People are going out or buying toys. We went to our favorite Mexican restuarant yesterday(Gallos) and the place was pack with twenty somethings. Until a couple of days ago it has been pretty slow in there.

4. Look to the sky and water: The first most sensitive activity is private small planes the second is |
|
boating.
Nobody is flying and few are boating.

10. Our small airport is still busy. Damn things keep flying over our house. |
|
And the new, expensive hangars the city built earlier this year--much to everyone's consternation--are all leased.

15. Well, it's both. Fuel costs and other travel expenses aren't cheap, |
|
so you have to be doing okay to fly the planes anywhere. I'm just seeing that in our particular airport, planes are still moving.

8. The mall was busy today. So was a strip mall of Old Navy, Kohls, Famous Footwear, etc. |
|
The neighborhoods I drive through are selling houses quick - because of the tax credit, I'm sure - my cousin who has never bought a house just put in a bid on one so he can get the tax credit. A house on my block sold within 2 weeks and I've seen 3 or 4 houses that I drive by every day get put on the market and sold within a month.
I also have more construction happening around here then I've seen in years. A condo place expanding, a new Walgreens being built, etc. - just in my normal stomping grounds it seems like life is stirring. I've also seen quite a few help wanted signs and chatter - shopping at Bed, Bath and Beyond today I heard a manager asking someone shopping (they obviously knew each other) if her son-in-law was still looking for a job because he was hiring.
Hopefully, it isn't an aberration. I always ask while checking out if they've been busy - their answers today were all around the lines of - Oh, yeah!

19. We went to our favorite Chinese buffet type restaurant Sat afternoon. |
|
Has always been open seven days a week. Was closed, lights out, no one inside. Went to another steak house/buffet type, looked like there were more employees there than customers. I hope things are getting better.
