Temple Announcement
Don Evans, spokesman for the church in Arizona, says the April 2008 announcement of temples to be built in Gilbert and in the Gila Valley came in response to demands currently placed on the state's two operating temples in Mesa and in Snowflake. In recent years, the Church has built temples on a smaller scale. Evans notes that the Mesa temple is more than six times the size of the temple in Snowflake.9
This two-temple announcement for Arizona was the first temple announcement made by President Thomas S. Monson since he became president of the Church in February 2008. "It is my personal priority to make sure members of the Church have access to the blessings of the temple," said President Monson. "It is here where members learn of their divine origin and destiny; where they are strengthened spiritually as individuals and as families. Temples are sanctuaries from the storms of life."10
Located in the fast-growing Southeast Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area—just south of Mesa—Gilbert and its surrounding communities enjoy a high concentration of Church members, who attend the Mesa Arizona Temple, which currently serves 76 stakes throughout much of Arizona. The edifice will make the sacred ordinances of the temple more accessible to the members of these communities.

-----------

As if my home town hasn't suffered enough from the massive mormon infiltration of local government. God only knows what will happen now.

I just hope Glenn Beck doesn't visit.

1. I have to admit: I lump Scientology and Mormonism together when it comes to sci-fi cult religions.
Although Mormonism is somewhat less silly just from been institutionalized longer. But they're both still pretty creepy. The biggest problem -- if they follow the archtectural practices of other temples I've seen, is that the temple will be way too big, obscenely out of proportion with its surroundings, and it will be floodlit at night so that aircraft will come to depend upon it as a navigational beacon. As neighbors, temples are not so great. In keeping with the church's attitude, they don't care. They don't have to.

2. It's being built on a lone plot of land surrounded by track housing.
It's about half a mile from an LDS church. It will most certainly be the largest building for miles and miles.

3. Freedom of religion and all that.
I have a friend who lived in Utah for awhile. She says she concluded that Mormonism was intended as a satire on religion.

Who knew so many people would take it seriously?

I'm wondering if the same isn't true of Scientology?

4. Well, one small bright spot is
that it will create some construction jobs during the building.

14. Greet them at the door naked and ask them if they want to participate in an orgy.

That will scare them off. If they don't take you up on it... I've heard some crazy story about badly-behaving mishies.

16. The good news is that they are really good on emergency preparedness.
I'm impressed by how much the average LDSer should know about keeping food pantries, how to obtain clean water, etc.

I feel for you, though, on them "taking over" your local govt. They certainly are a conservative lot.
