Where Have All the Leaders Gone?

By Lee Iacocca with Catherine Whitney
------------------------------------------------------

Had Enough?

Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore. The President of the United States is given a free pass to ignore the Constitution, tap our phones, and lead us to war on a pack of lies. Congress responds to record deficits by passing a huge tax cut for the wealthy (thanks, but I don't need it). The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq, the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving pom-poms instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of America my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?

I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have.

2. Cry me a river
Maybe the world would be a different place right now if the Iacocca's of the country hadn't put that evil piece of shit in office. Iacocca may be one of the "good" Republicans but that's like saying "less smelly horse pee".

7. But as a "proven republican" these words hold more weight
It's as if Snoop Dog or some other influential rapper had come out and condemned the misogyny in rap music. Sure, Pat Boone can complain about it all he wants, and we'd expect nothing less from him. But when one of the purveyors jumps ship and calls for his crew to do the same, I'd say that can only be a good thing.

9. Oh boo hoo.
Jump ship when the ship is sinking? If they had any REAL brains they would have refused to let the ship sail to begin with.

Everyone but McCain is jumping on this bandwagon. Sorry but IMHO too little too late. Republicans have forfeited their right to be taken seriously at this point. I know people want to hold them up and say "oh look this puke hates Bush", but I am so totally not impressed.

10. You make a good point, but still...ass covering is human nature
And these are some of the biggest asses on the planet. It takes longer to cover them.

11. It's not quite like he's "jumped ship"...
...He's not exactly refuting the sort of corporatism that helped make him a celebrity CEO (and * the "CEO President"), he's popping up after some years out of the spotlight basically proclaiming a pox on all houses for the Mess That We're In, neatly sidestepping some of the dirty details of how we got here.

12. He did support * in 2000, but not 2004
Politically, Iacocca supported the successful Republican candidate George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential election. In the 2004 presidential election, however, he endorsed Bush's unsuccessful opponent, Democrat John Kerry<6>. Most recently, in Michigan's 2006 Gubernatorial race, Iacocca appeared in televised political ads endorsing Republican candidate Dick DeVos.<7>

3. Iacocca may seem like a strange bedfellow, but
I think we ought to let him jump in with us. He is the kind of person we need if we are ever going to get rid of Bush and Cheney.

5. I agree with you completely. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Only foaming ideologues don't get that. And they usually go the way of the dodo.

Politics is the art of compromise. Do whatcha gotta do to advance the ball closer to the goalposts of your desires.

14. "corporate gangsters"?! Lee Iacocca called them "corporate gangsters?"
I do believe that CEO's may have changed drastically since Lee's time. If I'm allowed to make an observation, I would say that it happened when lawyering stopped becoming a profession, and became a business, and that happened shortly after the MBA mills churned out more graduates than we could sustain.
