So a Face Book 'friend' took exception to my congratulations to Obama....
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 06:16 PM by BooScout
It seems he didn't think President Obama deserved the Nobel Prize.....here's what he had to say:

"Hey BooScout....check out the FB poll "Did Barak O. deserve to win the prize?"....Over 80% of 283,000 plus voters said "No". I'm not being anti-Obama here. I'm just suggesting they award the prize to someone who has actually accomplished something. I think many others feel the same way. The Nobel Peace Prize is no longer credible in my mind!"

and my response:

"Can you think of anyone else in the world offering to talk to Iran, N Korea or Cuba and who doesn't throw out Bully Pulpit quips like 'Yer either fer us or agin us'......or someone else who has made overtures to Russia and is now actually talking about reducing nukes? Or someone who just might realize the Star Wars shield is not necessarily what we need? Or someone who was actually critical of Israel's policy of agression in the Settlements? Or someone else who is working towards getting us out of Iraq where we NEVER should have been in the first place? Or someone else who has been a champion for health care for all in the only industrialized country to not have some sort of universal plan and where over 45 million people are uninsured?

Maybe it's just me, but I find it's refreshing to have someone in the Oval Office who actually uses Diplomacy instead of threats against the rest of the world.

Again, Maybe it's just me, but I can't think of another person on earth right now who has so much affected the world in such a positive manner in the past year and then some. ...

For what it's worth, President Obama was not my first choice for President, Clinton was.......but so far he's been doing a pretty good job, in fact, considering what he inherited from that total fool Bush, I'm amazed he has accomplished so much considering we were teetering on the brink of a Depressiion for months and he still managed to stave that off and begin the reversals all over the world of the incredible damage That SOB Bush managed in 8 years.

And ..... I don't need a FB poll to tell me what others think.....I suspect most people give little to no thought on the subject of most of those polls."

3. good for you...
...I try to steer clear of politics on facebook (except when I know where people stand) because I see facebook as a cocktail party where you mingle when you want.

I'm as shocked as the next guy on Obama's winning the award - but very proud and hopeful.

4. I agree with you - He is not what I thought he would be, but many times
he has been better.
He certainly deserves it.

5. In my experience, the intertubes have been taken over...
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 06:22 PM by OneGrassRoot

by right-wingers. Facebook and pretty much all comment sections at any online news venue included.

I love the Internet, but I can't understand how they have managed to take over.

Half of them can't construct a complete sentence let alone spell correctly.

At least your Facebook "friend" isn't one of THOSE right-wingers. ;)

P.S. -- As to the Obama Nobel Prize flap, it shows how completely isolated many American citizens are in their thinking. They fail to grasp that this is a WORLD accolade...how Obama has affected the WORLD, not the U.S. To so many of them, it matters not what the rest of the world thinks of us.

6. The guy is well educated and a nice guy......
Unfortunately he's just mis-informed. I felt the need to educate him where he was lacking.

11. It's a controversial issue
Even the President said he didn't deserve it.

You have two choices, either completely surround yourself only with people who agree with you 100%, or have a wide variety of friends that you can learn from, or teach, if you have the better argument.

14. What controversy? He won and deservedly so.
People say "I don't deserve..." when they win an award. How many actors have said those words? The president was being humble and gracious when he said that phrase. It is not the first time the right wing has used his words against him.

18. Well, when you compare the President to past winners
You see that they have been people who have accomplished the actual signing of treaties, or have spent time in prison for their beliefs, or are organizations who have lost members in courageous fights against war and ignorance.

Let's face it, the reaction from many people here upon intially hearing the news was one of great surprise. And among the right wing, you cannot find a single person willing to give even grudging support of the award of the prize. I imagine the mushy middle out there finds the whole thing at least a bit puzzling.

That's why I call it controversial.

12. Your answer to facebook "naysayer!"
I really appreciate your answer to this "wet blanket!"
The whole world, except for a very few people, is pleased with President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. The bad spirit and poor reception of this award seems to be totally "MADE IN AMERICA" junk! We don't seem to be able to produce much these days, except negativity, insults, and racism toward our President!

I am proud of President Obama, with or without his Nobel Peace Prize! But apparently it takes the rest of the world to realize how lucky we are to have such a visionary man in office!

I am starting to understand the expression: "pearls are wasted on pigs!"

13. I absolutely hate Facebook wars like this. I generally try avoid friending right wingers.
I'm fairly strict on who gets onto my friends list, and if you do get onto it, it's because I've known you a while and thus likely your political bent.

Social authoritarians don't know how to have fun. So I generally don't hang around them as much.

16. I put the ones I don't really care what they think on Limited
so they don't see my status updates or anything else I do, so I don't have to hear what they think. Yeah, I friended some high school pals who might be right-wingers, but they can't see anything I do.

17. His response to me:
Was "I hear he's now up for the Heisman Trophy!"

My response right back at him:

"I fail to see a whole lot of humor in nukes, war, an economy ignored while we bombed other countries to stroke our egos and the lack of health care for so many Fred... so forgive me if I pass on chuckling at your joke.....oh wait, that's not your joke is it? It came from all the anti-Obama blogs and sites on the net.....so much for you not being anti-Obama."
