1. So here's our guy running the war in Afghanistan

"In Stanley McChrystal's Washington sitting room there is a severed arm. I notice it immediately - in my limited experience of life, severed arms and sitting rooms do not necessarily go together - but nobody mentions it. I am with the US General's Pentagon minders, waiting to interview the great man, and we make small talk about the Washington weather. Then I crack. 'What's with the arm?' I ask.

The severed arm, I should say, is sticking out of the kind of ornate frame you might choose for a watercolour. The arm looks real but is actually a prosthetic limb. On closer inspection the oddity is compounded: the hand is clutching a mobile phone..."

2. I thought the piece advocates more troops.

It seemed to be all about the Afghani's who want us there.
There wasn't much of a contrasting opinion there - unless you count the roll call.

I lived through Vietnam. This could be it all over again.
