The Pill makes you attracted to pansies
Or so says perpetually off-kilter Jill Stanek — except she uses the term “quiche-eaters.” Basically, a study says that women who use birth control tend to be attracted to men with more boyish features with caring personalities, versus “rugged” men with controlling personalities. The study itself is questionable, and the article detailing it comes from the less-than-reliable Daily Mail. But Stanek jumps on it nonetheless, saying, “Also don’t forget estrogen from the Pill is water has been found by several studies to feminize male fish. So women on the Pill may be getting what they’re helping create, wimps.”

Her post is pretty revealing. Pro-choicers often make the argument that at the heart of the anti-choice, anti-gay, right-wing philosophy is misogyny and, in turn, a vise-like grip on traditional gender roles. Men are lionized and women are at best marginalized and at worst despised. When women act “like men” and take their lives into their own hands — by having sex for pleasure instead of just procreation, by working outside of the home, or by otherwise subverting traditional gender roles — those who adhere to “traditional morality” get awfully upset. The same holds true when men turn gender roles on their head. For people like Stanek, the problem with abortion isn’t that it’s ending a life; if that were the case, she would support efforts to actually decrease the abortion rate, like comprehensive sexual education, gender egalitarianism and contraception. The problem isn’t life versus choice; the problem is choice itself, and what that choice means for women’s empowerment, safety and access to traditionally male spheres.

That the Pill would make women more attractive to “feminized” men confirms Stanek’s worldview; even putting aside the fact that a little poking reveals the study to be ridiculous, Stanek and her readers operate under the very basic assumption that to be “feminized” is a very bad thing. Calling someone a “quiche-eater,” as she does in her headline, is insulting because quiche is a woman’s food.

And the Pill is bad for women because it gives women control and a tiny bit of power over their own lives, which they surely don’t deserve.

I LOVE men with a 'feminine' side - that are a bit androgynous (in appearance and personality) - who are MAN enough to be (or even look) soft and sensitive - and they don't fear for their masculinity by being so. THAT IS A REAL MAN, IMO. He's SECURE enough to be HUMAN - including masculine and feminine traits.

4. Let me see if I've got this right
This person Stanek thinks it's somehow a bad thing to attract a guy who actually (at least tries) to listen- helps with the household chores, and doesn't stalk you out of jealosy or beat the shit out of you?

22. Wonder what she thinks of studies that show increased male hormones linked to
increased odds of being gay.
There have been many studies all supporting this. The first I read was from UC Berkley un 2000 and the last from Canada this month. The higher the uterine/fetal androgen level the higher the odds the son will be gay. Levels increase with each son so the more older brothers the higher the chances. Not definitive causation...some first sons are gay, most 5th sons are straight but the odds more than triple between those two groups.
Some also noted gay men having larger genitalia than heterosexual men....which I like because I think that would really irk the rw haters.

I was thrown by the title of this thread. Drawn to pansies? That didn't make much sense because pansies aren't even strongly scented so wasn't sure how a pill could affect the draw. Now they are fine flowers, wrongly named. "Pansy" sounds week and pansies can take cold weather that would kill other flowers.

Anyway I was so curious how it could work...and it is just some right wing loon, we aren't talking gardens at all.

Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 01:38 AM by Confusious
Is it a squash pie like thing?

Ok, looked it up. Has cream. Deserts have cream, not the main course. Might like it, more likely not.

16. Quiche is actually more like an omelette baked in a pie crust.
The cream is more to make the eggs fluffier.

27. I had quiche for the first time in my life
a couple of weeks ago and I wish I hadn't. It was absolutely delicious. Fluffier than an omelet with bacon and spinach mixed through and on a flaky pie crust. IT'S NOT FOR MY DIET and I wish I didn't know that there was such a tasty and fattening way to make eggs.

17. So....
women that live in a state where birth control is readily available and encouraged (likely a blue state) is more likely to be attracted to intelligent men that respect them (likey raised in a blue state) than a poorly-educated man that thinks women are for cookin' and baby-makin' (likely raised in a red state).

Surprise surprise.

20. Well lucky for them my IUD doesn't release any hormones at all.
Of course they seem to think that it's cuisinarting dozens of adorable and highly profitable lily white babies any time a man looks at me, but hey, no hormones! :D Pissing fundies off is just a delightful side effect.

25. ugh.. these bigoted macho-conservative women really need to go get
a good counselor and sort out their anger. There are all types of straight, gay and bi people that are butch to fem and even some of them change from day to day depending on what feels right to them at the time. These right-wingers focus on what's 'manly' says a lot about their lack of compassion and tells me many of them would assault Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, as being a girlie wimp. They wouldn't allow him into some churches.

Thanks charles! hope you're well!
