4. In case anybody is confused...
We have front row seats at the fall of an empire. It won't COMPLETELY fall in your lifetime or mine, but we are at exactly the point where it begins to become clear to everybody that it WILL fall.

...and thinking that we could insulate our species from natural selection was working SO well for us...

6. Ignorance is curable. Stupidity is fatal. Stupidity is choosing to remain ignorant.

7. I don't think people are any more or less stupid than before.
There are just more opportunities for people to put their stupidity on display thanks to 800 TV channels and the Internet.

8. There's a lot of comfort in ignorance.
It is also very compelling. Doubt, insecurity and indecision all can be avoided by choosing ignorance.

10. Unfortunately, some people are brighter than others.

Not hugely so, but enough that they get a kick out of using their brain. Sometimes this makes other people feel inferior so they take what is often a small difference in cognitive flexibility and enshrine their (often only very SLIGHTLY) slower wits as more "honest" or "down to earth" or often just "nicer".

This has been allowed to get out of control.

11. If we were, could we figure it out? Now if you mean "Are OTHER PEOPLE more stupid?"
(so as not to include me, you and the rest of DU), that I could agree with. ;)

13. The phrasing you're looking for:
"Are people more stupid today, or is it just me?" :D

14. Why do we get more wisdom from cartoonists & comedians
than we do from "journalists" and commentators?

I think this clip just explained it - ignorance grabs better ratings.

So, yeah, no doubt stupidity and ignorance are on the rise.
