Are "Liberal" and "Christian" close to synonymous? |
|
Isaiah 32:5-8 5. The vile person (Republican) shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl(GOP) said to be bountiful. 6. For the vile person (Republican) will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail 7. The instruments also of the churl(GOP) are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. 8. But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
King James Version

After all, Jesus took the loaves and fishes from the person who had them and fed the multitudes rather than letting one person gorge himself while the rest went hungry. He fed them and didn't give a sermon on finding jobs and getting rich so they wouldn't go hungry again. He gave them a sermon about how the poor, downtrodden and righteous were the favored people of god.
Unfortunately, he's been given a bad name by the people speaking for him in the churches these days. They're even going to rewrite his story, taking out all that sissy liberal stuff and leaving a guy with a sword who is going to mow down everybody who isn't a rabid capitalist.

6. I think both sides can cherry-pick verses to their liking. |
|
That's the appeal of the Bible, by design, it can speak to both conservatives and liberals, as long as they ignore the other parts of the Bible they don't like.
Of course, I just ignore all of it, as it is nothing more than a collection of old fables detailing the particulars and traditions of life around the 1st century, so much of it doesn't apply to us anymore today, its a wonder its still used for inspiration for anything, really.

You can find passages in the Bible to support just about anything. Eric Prince, for instance, is just as Christian as (I assume) you are.
