I absolutely love Helen Thomas. She as a National Treasure. But she is human, and therefore, fallable. And with her statement of "Obama lacks courage", she is demonstrating her humanity. I don't agree with her, and I know that many here are going to criticize me for it. So be it. But I believe that Obama has demonstrated great courage. Instead of citing examples, I will ask some questions.
Is it courageous to tell your friends what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear? Is it courageous to ignore your enemies instead of talking with them? Is it courageous to do what people want you to do instead of acting on information and logic? Is it courageous to hide your mistakes instead of owning up to them? Is it courageous to deny your weaknesses instead of acknowledging them? Is it courageous to do things hastily and wastefully vs. taking your time and doing it right when you know you'll be told your not doing enough? Is it courageous to remain silent on injustice instead of speaking openly about them? Is it courageous to take yourself seriously instead of making fun of yourself?
If you answer "no" to these questions, then you are telling Mrs. Thomas that perhaps she has made a mistake. Maybe she will be courageous enough to admit it.

2. His choices aren't in question here... |

According to Mrs. Thomas, it's his courage. That's hardly conscience.

Sometimes having another person advocating that you put your morals in perspective such as acting on them instead of being too cautious to act is "having a conscience" in a third party.
