Was the photoshopped Ralph Lauren model fired for being overweight?

Last week Ralph Lauren came under fire for (what looked to be) an extremely altered photo of a model in one of its ads. Bloggers at the website BoingBoing.net posted the image online, and lawyers for Ralph Lauren attempted to sue them for copyright infringement. Unfortunately for Ralph Lauren, this only furthered public interest and outrage over the dangerously thin looking model and, eventually, the clothing company released this apology:

1. I think so (although I'm not sure what reason they gave her). I caught the end
of an interview with her and she said she had no problem fitting into the clothes they provided for the shoot, and always was on time, always worked hard.

Ugly business, this selling beauty.

6. Have you seen the picture?
This is so NOT beauty - I think Salvador Dali has taken over the collective mind.

7. Just on TV -- and it was horrifying even from across the room! I think it's the
same with cosmetic surgery. We've seen so much EXTREME, BAD cosmetic surgery, we're becoming used to it. This, though, was worse than anything I'd ever seen. Like the airbrusher was high.

12. I agree
Not sure who did that but they need a lesson in the golden ratio. Distorted human bodies tend to look freakish for a reason.

4. What a PR disaster
every time the Lauren folks try to squash this story,
it just comes back bigger and more toxic.
Freakin' hilarious that they are such bumbling idiots when it comes
to doing the right thing for their brand (or just the right thing in general)

8. Lauren did a very stupid thing, indeed
If he had been smart, he would have apologized to HER, and then started a whole new untouched campaign with her...

5'10" and 120 lbs is "fat"??

ridiculous..

sample sizes used to be size 8.. I know this because my aunt used to run a clothing business and she always "tagged" samples because they were perfect size for her..of course back then a size 8 measured 32-24-33

The tape measure would not be so "kind" to modern day "size zeros"

I have a "small" friend who bought a vintage wool suit and never could fit into it, even after having it altered (clothes used to have "allowances" for alterations) :)

14. Something more going on here and in mind of Ralph . . .. hire a 14 year old if that's what .

he wants?

We should also keep in mind that this also works on the male mind taking

in the models and their sizes/figures.

ALSO that no matter the size, usually the garment sells for the same price ...

excluding PLUS sizes for women which are a higher price/no matter the specific size.

Men's PLUS sizes generally are the same price as regular sizes.

But -- overall, it's to a manufacturer's advantage to have everyone in a size 2!!

10. Too bad she can't sue him for ruining her image with that altered photo.
She's a beautiful woman and that photo makes her body look abnormal and hideous.

11. the 12 year old girls who eat this crap up are gonna look at themselves and ask
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 05:56 PM by corpseratemedia
"why aren't my legs as thin and boobs as big as hers yet? I need to diet - getting fired for being 120 proves 120 is FAT."

I should add: this crap is geared to 12 year old girls - the models are most often only a couple years older.

13. Jezebel is always doing side by sides with real photos and airbrushed ones
I'm glad more attention is being brought to this issue.

15. She was being paid for her looks, not to make other women feel better/worse.
If her looks are not acceptable, they have every right to fire her.
End of story.
