Chairman of the Orange County CA Board of Ed: Homosexuality 'not a civil right'
The chairman of the Orange County (California) Board of Education says she is "appalled" that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking schools to set aside a day to honor a controversial homosexual activist.

~snip~

Last month, the Orange County Board of Education voted unanimously (5-0) to oppose the creation of Harvey Milk Day. Dr. Alexandria Coronado, chairman of that board, says she is "absolutely furious" that the homosexual community is claiming that passage of the Harvey Milk bill is a civil rights victory.

"I think it just absolutely denigrates the entire civil rights movement. Homosexuality is not a civil right," Coronado emphasizes.

"I don't remember the last time that a homosexual person was forced to move out of their seat on a public bus, like Rosa Parks. And I don't remember the last time that a homosexual person or student...was forced to go to a segregated school, as in the case of Mendez v. Westminster, which took place right here in Orange County, California."

9. I grew up in Irvine
They tend to be country-club Republicans and don't want their tax dollars to go to the poor in Los Angeles county. Plus there's a conservative religious strain that was brought in by the many transplants from Oklahoma and so forth who used to pick oranges a la Grapes of Wrath.

25. Oklahoma...
was a socialist stronghold in the early decades of the 20th century. By your logic, if they brought evangelical Christian tenets, others should have brought socialist beliefs too.

12. as a resident of the OC for 25 years I'll take a shot
The OC isn't nearly as conservative as it was twenty five years ago. Back then it was a lot of Defense Contractor workers who moved down from LA, to get away from the "riff raff." That all changed in the 90s and the County became a bit more diverse. A lot of Asian and mid east immigrants mixing with the locals and Hispanics. For a county of 3,000,000 there really isn't a dominant government. There are 35 cities, I guess the most dominant one would be Irvine based upon the concentration of businesses in Irvine. There is a County board of supervisors, usually pretty far right, but they don't have much authority. Irvine actually went for Obama, as did many of the cities in North OC. The South OC can be a bit different. There are some planned communities like Cota de Caza that are just batshit crazy. Middle aged woman who a stuck at 18 and men who are still frat boys, very superficial, and probably 90% republican.

Most of the crazies don't get too far, hell I had no idea who was on the BofE. Once they make a name for themselves they usually can't get to the next step. As for Reps, we tend to get some whackos. B1 Bob was replaced by Sanchez, and we had Chris Cox. My concern would be the first group of locals coming out of the large (sheltered) planned communities.

16. Not everyone here is like that. Many new people have moved here, and it's becoming more blue. ro
However, the old guard is still here in full force and they are so messed up and small-minded. Can't stand it. And the school boards are rife with the worst kinds of fundies.

they miss the point that people don't need a right to be what they are, they need rights to be able to do what others are allowed to do.

Grew up in OC, and I managed to remain a civil rights lovin liberal. The bigots and wingers there can keep trying, they will keep failing to convince everyone they are the final word. They were jokes then and they are jokes now. We will keep fighting for and winning civil rights for Americans.

13. Well I guess being a human being isn't a civil right either unless
you can afford what they can afford. I don't think the brown people, who work for those movers and shakers, rank too high either. I remember when Orange County was full of orange groves ( why it has the name). Now it seems to be full of right wing lemons.

22. I don't know why anyone would listen to Orange County Republicans, like Alexandria Coronado
Orange County, of course, is chock full of rightwing nuts: this is, after all, the Republican-controlled county that Republican ideologues drove into bankruptcy few years ago; and it's the home of "family value" hypocrites like Michael Duvall, whose political career ended last month after he was caught bragging about his adultery

But Alexandria is orbiting even further from earth than most of them: she was the only candidate in the whole state of California rightwing enough to get an endorsement from Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum in 2004: http://www.eagleforum.org/election/endorse-2004.html
