Don't blame the Balloon boy or his family...
Blame the media for blowing the story way out proportion...

If I was a parent and I had a six year old son who wasn't to be found after I discovered that my "experimental" mylar flying saucer balloon thingy was missing, I would get all upset and call the local cops as well...

You seriously think the kid's dad lied?

For the purpose of... what?... 15 minutes of fame?

32. Several physicists have been quote that by their calculations a balloon
that size could not lift a child which the father being a scientist would have known and the father would also have known immediately that the basket wasn't attached but he said nothing. So yeah I think its a publicity scam.

24. His first call was to the FAA?
Oh man. I missed that gem.

I hope they investigate this, and if they find it was MIHOP, make him pay every penny of the emergency services wasted.

even had the FAA's number. But that was the first organization the dad thought to call.

34. Thanks for the info. I muted it and caught up on some Ratigan vids here.
Something really stinks about this.

It bothered me that the father "didn't look" at the coverage when he was the only one to know the intricate details of the equipment and could have aided law enforcement about little things like a missing basket...

Had no idea he called the FAA, I just assumed that a parent would call the local cops first.

13. I just hope they charge the family with the cost for this
rescue.

So what if the busiest airport in the country was disrupted for 30 minutes or so, its not like that thousands of people were inconvenienced so that dad could continue to be in the public eye and get the attention he craved

39. It was a huge story
I don't blame the media. If a six year old boy had been lifted off the ground in a weather balloon, and possibly had fallen from that weather balloon, the story would have been huge even without the media having to sensationalize it. I blame the father, well mostly the family. The family is weird, and they have done things in the past to try and get attention, including the mother going on a reality television show called "wife swap" This seemed like a tall tale straight from the beginning.
