Memorial service on now at VA Tech...
(on CNN)

Does anyone else see the unpleasant irony of an Honor Guard carrying ceremonial rifles kicking off this program?

1. I felt uneasy even with the sound off
So I didn't hear the guns. Listening to Thom Hartman, here. But still it gave me an odd feeling.

4. Do know that

Va Tech is NOT a bastion of Liberalism. It is a fairly Conservative school. I'm sure there are some depts that are more Liberal, but of the ACC programs, they are probably up there with Clemson and NC State for having the most Conservative fanbases. (that is just my feeling, did no studies...and I went to NC State so I can speak clearly on that one).

7. I've never found VT particulaly conservative
I've know dozens and dozens of people to have gone there over the years and know a couple people that work there and they were are mostly liberal to middle of the road. And to tell the truth I don't see what that matters anyway. If this had happened at Liberty University I would feel just as bad.

9. It matters
Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 01:41 PM by kwolf68
As many here on DU are hoping for some sort of anti-Bush backlash. It won't happen there. I agree about the comment at Liberty University as well.

Your idea that Tech isn't more Conservative (just as UNC-Chapel Hill would be more Liberal) is just wrong. There are several ACC schools that probably tend to be more Conservative and Va Tech is one of them. Then there are those schools that tend to be more Liberal as well. It's a natural thing.

Said, "Here in the Smokey Mountains..." :eyes:

I'll have to leave for work before shit for brains speaks but I thought I did smell something earlier today when he landed at the airport.

6. He's thanked everyone but Bush, so far. He's talking about
where to get counselling. Now introducing Bush BUT NO APPLAUSE.

10. WTF is Bush doing there?
Haven't these people suffered enough? Think of all the excessive security procedures the families and students will have to go just to see *'s pseudo-compassion.

And God help anyone who has a peace bumpersticker on their car -- they'll be kicked out of the services because you're not allowed to disturb the Boy King, according to *'s goons.

Remember early 2001 when the spyplane crew returned from China? * didn't show because he "didn't want to draw attention away from the welcoming ceremonies." Boy, that went out the window once his ratings tanked!

11. Applause would be quite inappropriate at a memorial convocation.
Don't think it means anything.

13. Why are they having a memorial service this soon? Do they even
have all of the victims identified yet? Wouldn't it make sense to let a few days or even weeks pass, so that there is time for some reflection?
