Oprah hopes Palin has the right stuff to win back viewers

Oprah Winfrey, on a campaign to climb back from last season's ratings slump, will attempt to kiss and make up with conservative viewers on Nov. 16 when she has Sarah Palin on her syndicated talk show .

You may have noticed that the appearance by the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate is happening smack dab in the middle of the November ratings derby.

It's also the day before Palin's new book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," is scheduled to hit bookstores.

1. Yea...the book. I got an email 2 days ago saying I can buy it for $9.99!
A book that is listed for $29.95 and hasn't even come out yet! That told me a lot!

21. It would take more than $9.99 for me to take it...
Move the decimal point to the right three of four places, and maybe I'll give it some consideration. I'll need to pay chimney sweep to purge my chimney of her crud after I use it for kindling in my fireplace. The rest is for pain and suffering after having that piece of garbage in my presence.

Amazon is in a price war with Walmart. ALL their books are priced at $9.00 for pre-orders.

2. If that is true..it is very, very sad...pathetic in fact.
That woman could walk away now and never earn another penny and still be set for life. Why should she sell out now????

4. Absolutely. it is all about $$$$$$. And power. She likes that a lot.
Thats what the book promotions and the electioneering are all about. And the seminars ripping off desperate women. She is one of the corporate masters and likes it that way.

22. Yes indeed
I went off Oprah in 2000 when she didn't talk about the egregious disenfranchisement of thousands of black voters in Florida. She had the chance to tell the nation what really went on. Instead she gives away cars to make herself feel good.

5. It's all about her ratings, which of course is about her.
I admit, I'll watch if she has Sarah Palin on. Of course I'll be hoping for some kind of meltdown.

Oprah is no dummy, but I'm bothered by the smell of the sellout factor just for the sake of ratings.

Jeez. I like her but this stinks.

35. Apparently Oprah had been very non-political until Obama's campaign
and usually had both candidates on her show in the past.

By actively supporting one candidate last year she turned off a lot of people who watched her show and they haven't come back post-election.

The Palin appearance is something that Oprah said she'd like to do at some point so this really shouldn't be a surprise even if the timing is pretty transparent.

12. I watched one segment where she was mocking her critics
Interviewing Tiger Woods about a new book and she says something about people criticizing her and "yes, I got this book for free" and "Tiger, will you sign it for me?"

Her whole attitude just made me sick.

13. Why is it a bad idea? I think Sarah Palin is
a joke. But this is what Oprah does. She's also done a ton of good things, more than many of us would be able to do, for other people. I think she has a right to win back her viewership or to lose it. I give her credit for Not giving Palin a platform during the campaign. That said, I'm glad I stopped watching years ago because this is one interview I'm happy to miss.

18. I'm OK with Oprah having Palin on her show

The other day Mike Tyson was on and he certainly has issues. She presented the good, the bad, the ugly and the bright spots of his new life as well. That was OK with me to see that people are trying to change.

She had Whitney Houston on and the interview was interesting as well. At the end anyone could see that Whitney still has issues and Oprah asked hard questions that she could not avoid.

Just because Sarah Palin is on her show, that doesn't mean that Oprah will give her flowers. She allows the audience to judge and that is fair.

I could look at Palin 1000 hours and it could not change my mind. I'm not going to buy her book or be a Republican.

Oprah's shows this year have been fantastic, even better than before.

Someone mentioned that she is just doing it for her ratings --that seems to be what every show wants to do.

I believe if she retired tomorrow she would have enough money to make do.

19. Wow, thanks for the assessment! And you've summed
up my feelings about Palin on her show better than I could.

Really, I haven't heard or read such a glowing review of any show in so long that I'm definitely going to check her out again - before and after the Palin appearance though :D

25. Well, she certainly didn't present the "good, bad, and ugly" when Billo the Clown
came on her show last year for nothing more than a book-plugging! She never touched on the sexual harassment case, nor did she address the very relevant issues of his invitation as guest speaker for a women's advocacy group, shortly after his comments in which he blamed rape victims for their own assault, or his statements that a young boy had actually enjoyed his time in captivity, held by a sexual predator.

15. Oprah devolved into a disgusting entity
Her ego is unmatched, her greed without compare. Her endorsment of Obama almost made me vote for someone else, as Oprah is not much of a person in my book. She could have been great. Instead she's just not. And Palin, that is Opie's level of things right there. She will have an hour long book selling session with a woman who accused 'the One' of pal'n around with terrorists. Because words don't matter unless they are bound into product form to sell on the show. She'll push this book of lies without flinching, she will in fact sell the lies about her own 'friend'.

her thing and getting paid for it? If it's 'ok' for every other entertainer, why not Oprah? I don't understand some folks.

36. Transferring that sentiment to sports (being not about politics)
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 09:13 AM by Mike Daniels
Michael Jordan said it best when asked why he wasn't politically outspoken about candidates or issues....

"Republicans buy shoes too".

Most people in the entertainment business will go out of their way to not alienate a significant portion of their potential audience.

30. IF she does it, she should have a surprise appearance by Levi - in the buff

Since the guest is so 'Jerry Springer', her show may as well go there too.

And as for picking Palin, I think she should skip her but I'll reserve judgement because Oprah might be doing us a favor throwing a little light on the fungus.
