I started prophylactic Tamiflu today

My son has H1N1 and while he is getting through it without a problem, I have asthma and I work in a NICU so I'm taking the Tamiflu. Hopefully, I can get the vaccine prior to being off of the med. I'm still going to wear my respirator mask around my kiddo (and now it looks like hubby may be coming down with it too, so I may get damn used to these duckbilled masks). I have to wear a regular mask at work to protect my little charges.

My kiddo tends to rip through the regular flu pretty fast generally. I always get the flu shot so I've only gotten the flu from him once before and I got a secondary pneumonia that almost killed me, so I'm being extra cautious. I've heard this med tends to cause a bit of nausea. I hope it doesn't for me. That's why I just took it - I head for bed soon, so hopefully if there is nausea, I'll sleep through it.

4. Nausea is probably the worst symptom for me

Seeing too many folks around me getting sick, is motivating me to get a flu-shot. I got terribly sick over a week ago, along with three others in my house... it lasted for quite a while.

but that said, Tamiflu is very effective for prophylaxis, so there ya go.

I thought that people working in the NICU or ICU would be the first to get the H1N1 shot.

My son spent 2 weeks in the NICU because he was only 3.5 lbs when he was born. I am incredibly thankful for those great nurses who took care of him.

7. We are but it isn't getting to my hospital until Nov 2 at the earliest

Because I have asthma and because I work with neonates, I cannot take the nasal form of the vaccine. And now that I'm on Tamiflu, the nasal form wouldn't be effective anyway. So, I wait and I pop pills. I took the first pill about 2 hours ago, though, and no nausea so at least that's good.

11. Was he tested or was it just assumed? Apparently there is some controversy

about many people thinking they've had it or have it when they don't. Leaving them at risk as well as artificially inflating the number of actual cases (ie reasons to be scared)

12. I have "heard" that gargling with saltwater and nasal saline may also be prophylactic.

It's one of those things I saw on a viral email, so I wouldn't take it as gospel. But supposedly it can interfere with viral reproduction in the throat and nasal passages. I can see how it might work.

I'm concerned for myself as well....I always seem to get pneumonia when I get a cold or flu....this stuff is just nasty if you have a pre-existing condition like ashthma.
