Bardwell: A White Woman Would Have to be Drunk to Want to Marry a Black Man
OK - that's not what he said.

But it is what he analogized.

The Tangipahoa Parish JP's appearance on CBS this morning - via Crooks and Liars:

Bardwell denied on "The Early Show" that he broke any laws.

"The law says that I cannot deny mixed race marriages," he said. "And that means prevent them from getting married. And I did not prevent them getting married."

But would Bardwell refuse anyone else a marriage ceremony?

Initially, he said he would not refuse a couple on any other grounds, but then corrected himself, saying, for example, he would refuse to marry a couple if one -- or both of them -- was intoxicated.

"I can recuse myself and tell them to come back when they're sober," he said. "That's legal."

Interracial = drunk.

Wow.

Now, lets go back to one of his other statements:

I did not prevent them getting married.

Yes you did, Bard. The fact that they subsequently got married is irrelevant. You did prevent them from getting married - even but for a few minutes (though I think it was a bit longer than that.)

JPs don't necessarily have to be lawyers, so I don't know if The Bard is one or not. Assuming he isn't - here's a lesson via hypothetical for him.

1. Equal Protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
A government or an official of a government cannot discriminate in the ministrations of his/her/its duty based on the characterization of race. In other words, you can't treat one group of people different from another group.

5. Gender discrimination is "quasi" right now according to Supreme Court caselaw.
They don't have the same strict scrutiny and protection as does race, national origin, or religion.

If there is ever a future case that would elevate gender discrimination, it would be open-and-shut for discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals.

6. black is black and white is white...the language regardless of how one interprets it states firmly
that denying same sex couples who are a group is illegal period...we should all be up in arms at the injustice and outright criminal acts of those in government positions who so abuse the law...and according to you..it is the law regardless that there are some that do not give it as close scrutiny as they should...

crazy world we live in...downright ignorant

8. Miles between "should be" and "is".
Either it's enforceable law with the courts to back it up or it isn't. And tragically, despite prior cases, it isn't right now.

10. I understand its miles but that doesn't mean it shouldn't enrage me that we allow
our government employees to continue breaking the laws of this land by downplaying the rights of one particular group of people as to mean they become in effect second class citizens unworthy of what we are all entitled to under the law of this land..

I assume that no lawyer has ever been able to get a judge or jury to see that denying another american citizens his or her civil rights under the law to view it as illegal and to enact a judgment of such on such cases...

your right it is tragic..more than tragic..downright un american and unworthy of what this country should stand for...as in equal rights..

such is why I despise the ability of the religious front to invoke it's beliefs inside our laws to such an extent that their desires actually make the laws of this land in a way obsolete unless it serves a purpose to further their own ambitions and or beliefs..however they choose to see it...

2. Well that's funny...

I'm dating a multiracial woman, and we were sober on our first date, sober the first night we spent together, and sober when we became a couple.

We have been intoxicated together, but we had already been dating for a bit by then...

And she's so yummy :D And much more intelligent, cultured, and educated than anyone else I've dated.

3. spinning on that spit
the races. I think anyone who uses that word is ignant.

There are humans, and there are non-humans.

Humans have different cultures-of-origin, but they are still human.

"Interracial" means between humans and aliens, I guess. I had carnal relations with a martian once, in Vegas, but I was VERY drunk, or, it might have just been gumby. It was a bad hangover - I still remember seeing double with one eye closed.
