Maddow & Olbermann Invited to White House Chat with Obama

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/maddowolbermann_invited_to_white_house_chat_with_obama_but_fox_isnt_a_news_organization_140839.asp

Here's a curious turn in the White House vs. Fox News fight.

On Monday, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow were among several people who attended an off-the-record briefing with Pres. Obama at the White House. Sources tell us other attendees at the two-and-a-half hour chat included Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Gwen Ifill of PBS and Gloria Borger of CNN. Perhaps not surprisingly, no one from Fox News was in the room.

This fact quickly turned into ammunition for the folks at FOX. Last night on "Special Report," Bret Baier revealed the information pointing out that opinion hosts from one channel were being invited to a briefing with the Commander-in-Chief, all the while Fox was declared not a news organization.

And it continued on Fox & Friends this morning, as the troika talked about the back-and-forth ABC News White House correspondent Jake Tapper had with press secretary Robert Gibbs in the morning off-camera gaggle yesterday.

(However, co-anchor Gretchen Carlson didn't have her facts correct when she said, "in this reporter gaggle was Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann who are opinion people over at MSNBC." Maddow and Olbermann were in the off-the-record briefing on Monday not the on-the-record gaggle on Tuesday.)

of what every news organization must have to survive, access. And they did it, not by being opinionated, but by LYING.

Keith and Rachel may be opinionated, but they do not LIE and that is what is wrong with Fox. They LIE.

27. Good for you that you don't watch them
Where to start lol. Mediamatters does a pretty good job of correcting their lies. There are so many, it's hard to give examples. But eg, during the 2004 election they had the Swift Boat Veterans for 'Truth' on daily telling lies about Kerry's war record. Even after the Navy and people who were actually with him in Vietnam stepped up to verify his record, the lies continued. They, eg, lied that these guys were 'with Kerry' in Vietnam, when in fact only one of them may have been.

That is just one example that comes to mind ~ but I think if you just put 'Fox lies' into your search engine, you'll get plenty of hits.

Also, they actually won a lawsuit on appeal claiming they had the 'right to lie'. That involved two reporters who had done a documentary for them relating to the environment, I beleive. When big corps got upset, the reporters were asked by Fox to change the story. They refused, Fox fired them and they sued claiming Fox had asked them to lie. They won, but Fox appealed and claimed they had no 'obligation to tell the truth'. Amazingly the appeal judge agreed and they the reporters lost their case.

43. Yep, they actually made that arguement in court, and they won!
It seems to me as if they shouldn't be allowed to use the word "news" in conjunction with their programming. There should be some kind of consumer protection, something like an implied warrany of merchantability or whatever, that would prevent people like the cable companies from selling such a defective product. It is INTENTIONALLY defective, as they argued to the judge.

Oh, and another thing; I watch both KO & RM religiously, and have heard each of them actually criticize the President on numerous occasions. I realize that makes them persona non grata with some, but for anyone to suggest they're robotic shills for this administration is pathetically laughable.

15. Everyone should just ignore them
Their audience is never going to change their minds as they are hardcore rabid rightwingers. It is also miniscule comparatively speaking. Leave them to rot and cry and whine in their own little corner of the world. The world has more important issues to worry about. They had their eight years unfortunately for this country.

I will never forgive them for the role they played in helping to steal the 2000 election. The time to marginalize them was long ago but better late than never.

Fundamentally, he's going to work with news outlets that act like news outlets and opinion hosts that issue opinions based on available data, not GOP propaganda arms and their talking points memo regurgitating peons.

Faux News can dish it out but they can't take it. If the White House had cut them off sooner they would have to be a lot more creative making up what they claim is "news." Maybe if Obama keeps pushing back they will go down the tubes with the other propagandists and leave the news media to actual reporters.

Hey Fox! Did you ever stop to think (no, I know that's a foreign concept to them) that even though Maddow/Olbermann and the others are left of center or centrist, they also constructively critique the President and the administration too? Yes - yes they do!! He has no problem with that because it's constructive - not DEstructive like all of your "reporters" seem to do.

57. Oddly the best explanation was from Mika on 'morning joe'
I rarely watch that anymore but when I did she never stood her dround.

She did about fox, meeting every argument. She doesn't think the 'war' on fox is a big deal, she thinks they are just stating the obvious
Paraphrasing her point on this is that yes, most agencies or shows have their political slant and that's fine as long as they tell the truth and try to present it fairly. It is not OK if you are lying and spreading hate. That's not the same and that it's propaganda, not news.

Maybe that's a set up and soon she'll see it joe's way (who thinks they are doind it to warn/control rest of media)

Look I don't think it's a war, Obama doesn't spend much time on it. It only comes up now in response to questions, they put their opinion out there. Didn't sound angry or attacking or threatening

I remember Obama saying if he watched that channel all the time and believed it he wouldn't like himself either, he'd be scared of himself. He didn't name station but he is right. So many baggers and birthers are all fox news and rw radio...and proud of it.

I've only seen clips of hate media when they are linked oe read transcripts from shows but from those... why wouldn't they hate Obama? If you are sane you will dislike and fear a dangerous man who does not love the country, wants revenge on whites and has horrible plans and is doing what (insert scary name or title here like Hitler and dictators and mass killers) and so on. Some of the less stable could be driven to violence...believing it is patriotic or saving America.

I don't know if clips are the worst of fox and hate radio and I'd get a different impression if I watched whole shows. Like Rev Wright looked so horrible in those clips but the rest of the decades of sermons were non-controversial, those clips made a false impression (that media never tried to correct of course).
So I recognize those shows might not be as horrible as I feel that they are. Does anyone watch them and have a truer perspective than I do?

62. To point out the difference from the Fox approach and more real news approach?
Maybe the WH felt they had to inform them that when they go strictly to "opinion" and attacks that they might be viewed as "an arm of the Government"? That even though they might have facts, they might loose credibility and ground in educating people. Just my guess.....And possibly to explain why Faux is being ignored and why they made that statement.....????

Seriously??? They and their careers faced far more threat from the Busheviks than they could ever face from the Obama administration. Yet, they spoke their minds constantly. If you watched either of their shows, you'd know that they not only ignored Rahm when he told the left to shut up, they ripped into him over it. The only reason they were invited to the WH was to poke a finger in the eye of Fox News, who was shut out of the whole thing. Nothing more.
