'Die quickly' congressman creates namesofthedead.com; GOP cries foul
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/64129-die-quickly-congressman-creates-namesofthedeadcom

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.), whose "die quickly" remark gained him much attention, has created a new website based on his meme called "namesofthedead.com."

On the site, visitors can log the names and stories of friends and relatives who died because they lacked health insurance. Users are prompted to enter their name, address, zip code, and e-mail address as well as their friends or relatives' name, hometown, and story.

"I have created this project in their memory," the site, funded by Grayson, says. "I hope that honoring them will help us end this senseless loss of American lives...Help us ensure that their legacy is a more just America, where every life that can be saved will be saved."

Grayson announced the creation of the site on the House floor today using a poster with the site's web address.

http://namesofthedead.com/
Share your Story
Every year, more than 44,000 Americans die simply because have no health insurance.

I have created this project in their memory. I hope that honoring them will help us end this senseless loss of American lives. If you have lost a loved one, please share the story of that loved one with us. Help us ensure that their legacy is a more just America, where every life that can be saved will be saved.

Very sad. This is what no one wanted to talk about and I'm glad someone is remembering those poor people.

As for the Republicans, no one cares about their whining anymore. He's taken on the bullies, and typical of all bullies, all they can do is cry.

I would ask them what they think ought to be done about those who have died and simply ignore their disgusting attempt to cover up what is at the very least, criminal negligence of the citizens of a country that has money to spend to kill people, but none to spend on their own citizens lives.

95. yes.. there's a book I've been meaning to read on the subject
it's called "The Culture of Snark".

Some dive deep in the culture of coolness by verbal castigation. Seems so called "humor" is rife with it (teevee sit-coms come to mind especially...unintellectual and dependent on as many dirty double entendres as possible.)

and if thoughts lead to words, and words lead to action..... what kind of karma does this create, individually and as a society?

bleh...

anyway, back on topic ------- YEAH and KnR for Grayson!! Truth! It's what for breakfast (finally).

120. www.wordscanheal.org
This is all about Right Speech, which a Northern Indian guy named Prince Siddhartha Gotama talked about many centuries ago:

Words Can Heal is a national campaign to eliminate verbal violence, curb gossip and promote the healing power of words to enhance relationships at every level.

At a time when so many feel that outside events are beyond their control, we offer concrete tools and know-how to dramatically rebuild our communities and relationships through the words we speak and the way we communicate. At a time of national crisis, as we re-evaluate our lives and re-order priorities, the Words Can Heal message resonates even more forcefully.

Words Can Heal has captured the imagination and commitment of an unprecedented coalition. Our board includes the top leadership, leading diplomats, Wall Street's most influential CEO's, America's leading clergy, Hollywood celebrities and community leaders of every stripe,

including:
Tom Cruise, Goldie Hawn, Rene Russo, Senator Tom Daschle, Senator Sam Brownback, Congressman Peter Deutsch, Alan Hassenfeld, Chairman and CEO of Hasbro, Warren Weiss, Venture Partner at Charles River Ventures and Robert Schuller, Founding Pastor of Crystal Cathedral.

I suppose Repugs would be qualified to recognize using the dead for political gain. They did.... and still do!...use 9/11 to promote the unnecessary and unlawful occupation of countries that themselves were no threat to the US, as well as draconian safety measures that do nothing but take away constitutional rights from citizens.

And look at how the despicable Grayson is "using" the dead! To promote more accessible health care for every citizen! Unbelievable!!!

Wait a minute.... hmmmmm...

One of these things is not like the other....

Repugs are just awful! They have nothing to offer. They are simply in the way of moving forward.

Again, sociopaths rationalize their inexcusable, hateful treatment of living, breathing human beings by referencing a glob of cells.

I suggested something similar, maybe a little bit more grass rootsy just yesterday

I thought it would be great to make an impact in local papers as well as a website.

A bunch of people were putting fake names on the site. Not really his fault but whoever he hired to create the site should have put some kind of approval system in the Name Submitting process to filter out fake names.

50. GOP Alleges Grayson Breached Ethics Rules, Grayson,“Let them file a complaint.
http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docID=news-000003227916

Republicans believe Rep. Alan Grayson , D-Fla., violated ethics rules when he took to the House floor Wednesday afternoon and promoted a new Web site which includes a link to a page that accepts donations to the his re-election campaign.

But whether Republicans will take the next step and file an actual ethics complaint against him is another matter. Members of Congress generally operate under an agreement not to file complaints against one another.

(snip)
Grayson told the Orlando Sentinel the Republican charges were a “stretch.”

“Let them file a complaint. I’m sure I’ll be vindicated,” Grayson said, according to the Florida newspaper.

51. This is an example of how we need to change our methods of protest.
"Hitting the streets" hasn't worked for decades now, as we learned in the run-up to the bombing of Iraq.

We need to get a lot more creative.

Grayson is showing us the way.

77. Health INSURANCE does not equal or guarantee
health CARE. Hundreds of thousands more who are insured are denied needed care by their insurer, or are forced to fight for it at the very time they're fighting their illness. That cannot be stressed enough, that it is NOT just due to no health insurance, it's a CARE issue as well.

And I wish he'd do one for those murdered by medical malpractice, too; there are FAR more of those than you'd ever like to think. My best friend of thirty years was killed by an act of gross, inexcusable negligence and subsequent failure to correct it; she could have been saved if they'd corrected it in time, which they didn't. She suffered horribly for months before dying. There is NO EXCUSE for that, period. Yet all doctors and congresscritters care about is protecting them from any accountability for the consequences of their negligence; they don't give a good goddamn about the very real and numerous victims of malpractice.

82. Now we need a traveling wall...
Rep. Grayson is the shizznit. On Bill Maher last week, he noted he's an admirer of Huey Long and offered a quote. You should have seen the surprise on The Proper Cornellian's face: "The Great Unwashed! On my show!" Ayuh, Billy, and there's more where that came from.

Grayson's using the same in-your-face reverence the chickenhawks reserve for their worn out tools, I mean, the war dead. Imagine that.

Edited on Thu Oct-22-09 01:58 AM by zoff
... you have to respect and value all life, one more thing reich wingers are incapable of. "The right to healthcare is not in the constitution." Need I say more? Actually I will. The unborn child is the only life conservapuglicans care about. And maybe only if the mother is american. All lip service that caters to believers of the alleged judeo-christian underpinnings of the republic. Also, wtf is compassionate conservatism? They HAD to use that adjective just to feel good about themselves. Let's play word association ... conservative ... KKK, war, lies, adulterer, homophobe, lunatic, teabag, douchebag ... the word compassionate will never come up.

Keep it up Congressman Grayson!

89. Here's mine
Sheryl E------, age 55, found a lump in her breast 5 months before being laid off as a school bus driver. Since she already knew, as we all did, that she was going to be laid off, and that she would be unable to afford COBRA, she decided not to seek treatment until she could get a job with the new contractor and her new insurance became active. She did not want to take the chance of being denied for having a pre-existing condition. It is my opinion that she might have survived had she not waited 7 months before seeking treatment. She died after a long battle with breast cancer. She had been a major influence in my daughter's life, helping me to raise her from the age of 3 to 11.

100. I don't like this line though
"Every year, more than 44,000 Americans die simply because have no health insurance."

No, they died because they didn't have access to healthcare when they needed it.

It's like an unemployed person saying they couldn't get to work because they didn't have a car.

107. 44,000+99,000=143,000 dead each year from no and poor coverage
Also added in that combined figure is medical errors so maybe even the greed heads might notice if it is brought to their attention. It won't matter because to them that is just the natural order of things. (As they have created it to weed out the non-productive ones. NO money no treatment.) Who needs death panels? So the drama---it is the ultimate banality and positively boring in its mathematical deductions of what will be paid for and what won't. Doctors have no place in what is covered just the accountants. But then Sara Palin is a drama queen and the "death panels" sounded so dramatic. Nope. It still kills just that you will never see the faces of those who decided the cost to benefit ratio of your life. If they even thought about that component in their cold equations.

But then haven't you heard? The fix is in. The reason why no health industry, AMA or Big Pharma has said anything is that in secret meeting President Obama sold us out. We may or may not get a limp public option, we will all be forced to join an insurance company, they will take any pre-existing condition and for what you ask? They can raise their rates as much as they want. How does that sit with all of you?
