ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The body of a white child has been found a landfill in Georgia and the sheriff's office said many factors indicate the body is that of missing 7-year-old Somer Thompson.

"It's with deep regret and sadness that I have to inform you that a body has been found in the landfill in Folkston, Georgia. The body appears to be that of a small child," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said.

Beseler said the garbage in the dump was collected in the Orange Park area, which is where Somer was last seen.

"As a matter of routine course, as soon as we find a missing person case has been initiated, we begin following the garbage trucks. We had the garbage secured overnight, and the body was discovered today," Beseler said.

Beseler said an FBI forensics team is on its way to the scene to investigate.

7. It is frighteningly easy to lose a child.

We lived on a long cul de sac when my kids were young. Our driveway was steep with a slight gutter running where it met the street. When my son's bike still had training wheels, he learned how to get the bike "stuck" in the gutter so he could pedal and see the wheel turn. He would just sit there and pedal, looking down as he watched the wheel turn.

I sat on a patio chair, reading mostly, and didn't think much about the fact that no one coming down the street could see me, because I was sitting behind the oak tree by the side of the house. Well, there were several things that were odd about the car that came down the street. First, I couldn't hear the engine running. The car moved slowly and it was incredibly quiet, almost like it was in neutral. The second odd thing about the car was that it was coming down the street in reverse. And the third thing that was odd about the car was that there was a couple inside. A man and a woman, about early thirties. I still was suspicious, even though it didn't meet the stereotype of some pedophile. I mean, people do kidnap children, for more than one reason.

They were surprised to see me and quickly stated that they thought my son was in trouble and were coming down to see if they could help.

No problem, I said. He just likes to spin his wheel. They broke out in a smile and left. I don't recall that I looked at the license plate. Everything happened that quickly.

I've always wondered about that event. They were complete strangers. Never saw them before, and never again. Why would they come down a cul de sac, in reverse, if not to make it easier to leave quickly?
