School district trustee in Orange County seeks to ban Maya Angelou book from libraries
October 21, 2009 | 12:09 pm

There have been several attempts in recent years to ban certain books at Orange County schools. The list includes "Twilight" and "Snow Falling on Cedar." Now, a Westminster school board member has raised concerns about a Maya Angelou book that includes a rape scene.

Should the book be banned from school libraries? The Register's Annie Burris looks into the issue:

Judy Ahrens, a former Westminster School District trustee, took to the podium at Monday's Huntington Beach City Council meeting to read a scene from Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings'' that details the rape of an 8-year-old girl. The reading was a demonstration on why the book should be banned, she told the audience.

"I would like to say I don't wish to read this material … but for the sake of the innocence of our children … sometimes we have to do things in life we are uncomfortable with," Ahrens said during the meeting which is televised on the city's cable channel.

1. It happened here in Montgomery County

We had some NUTTERS who got it on our local ballot. Even our 78% straight Republican ticket voting county voted this one down. I think this particular issue brought out the laissez-faire Dems to defeat it. I was greeted at my polling place by some of the naziphiles, asking me to vote for book burning. Our county librarian stood them down and ended up getting a huge grant because of her strength.

These same people didn't want a replica of the Statue of David at a local shopping center. The owner of the shopping center had to modify the original installation to put a fig leaf in the "appropriate zone."

You gotta watch the elected "education" folks. No place but Texas demonstrates that better.

3. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is autobiographical

and the child that is raped is Maya Angelou. I suppose they think she should have left that out.

I'll bet money what they really object to is not the rape scene but being reminded of life in the south before the Civil Rights movement.

I think over 85% were against the ban, thank goodness. Not sure if that will have any bearing on whether it is banned in that district, but most people are against this.

6. Judy Ahrens and,,,
John Briscoe---partners in right wing/fundamentalist/nuziod schitt in Orange County have a long history of screwing school districts--

Ahrens was 'thrown off' the Westminster Board of Education for just this type of stuff, and John Briscoe tried to run for offices in two different districts---check out this news report:

these people ARE complete nutziods---and they won't go away- it's apparently our cross to bear here in the OC!
