Michael Sanchez, a college student from Hicksville (Long Island, NY) decided to play Sweet Million - the state's newest lottery game - instead of his usual instant-win games because he liked the kittens pictured on the advertisement <...> Thursday, Sanchez, 21, was catapulted into the spotlight as he accepted a jumbo $1 million check as the first Long Islander to win the game that the state launched last month.
After state and federal taxes, Sanchez - a liberal arts student at Nassau Community College who hopes to become a nurse - will take home $660,300.

Sanchez, who lives with his parents and brother, William, 27, said he's been playing Lotto twice a week since he was 19. He said he's seen winners on television who end up losing all their money or "buying ridiculous stuff." "I always said if I win, I'm not going to do none of that," he said. As for the winnings: First, he said, he'll help his parents pay bills - "they've been so good to me my whole life." He said the family moved here from El Salvador when he was a baby.
