Tv was only on a few hours a day ?
Remember shows like Car 54 where are you or The life of Rily ? Tom and Jerry ?
Beanie and Cicel ?
Garfield Goose ?
If you do , think of those days and jump to today , my god this really freaks me out .

but to hear my mom tell it, those days weren't the greatest. They were doing bomb drills at school, women were treated like crap, blacks suffered under oppression and more.

that black, white and gray of TV truly reflected the US at the time. But if you peeled back the cover there was a cauldron readying to boil over.

My parents didn't buy a tv until we all graduated from high school (I was the last one in 1964). I don't have a tv today...I'm a reader, and I prefer to get my news on DU and other internet sites.
But I do appreciate what you are saying. My daughter and I had a conversation today that trends to your post. She had picked up my granddaughters from the other grandmother who is heavy into barbie, princess stuff, videos, etc., and her oldest (6 years old) was being totally princessy (I'm not sure that's a word!) and DEMANDING to have things her way. My daughter was saying she's never this way when she comes home from visiting me. Well, we cook things together, do puzzles, work in the garden when weather permits, paint, make things with play doh, and read, read, read books. Makes a HUGE difference.
