Fascinating classic based on John Steinbeck's novel. Passionate and powerful. Could this scenario be coming again? :(

3. That and Link are my main stations |
|
The great thing about TCM is that the prints have been restored to their original condition, crisp with no splices.
If it weren't for those two stations, I'd probably dump the dish. I'm really over the rest of it.

I have been buying more movies. I think I'll go right now and order Grapes of Wrath.

an' their kids ain't no good an' they die out. But we keep a'comin'. We're the people that live. They can't wipe us out; they can't lick us. We'll go on forever, Pa, 'cause we're the people."
God, I love that line from Ma Joad.

but it'll be different as it's now very different times. They hardly had telephones then, especially in the country. I remember my grandparents having a party line and actually calling a local operator to get connected with a local person. They didn't have TV but they had radio. They had fireside chats with FDR.
Very different times. Less population, less pollution, between wars. But we're still falling into another Depression. Maybe it'll be worse. More people will be homeless and there isn't anywhere to go. Corporations have taken the jobs away.

They headed west during that period.

15. I don't know, but I think the government may have to intercede (interfere?) |
|
They headed west but they found nothing when they got there. Now it's pretty easy to find out there's nothing west or anywhere else with the internet and 24/7 news. If there's a bad drought again they'll go where the food is.
Then there are the FEMA trailers and 'detention' centers. From what I gather they were built for just such contingencies, only they pretended it was for illegal aliens coming in as refugees. Of course they wouldn't tell us it was for any large displaced population, including Americans that might become a mob or overcome other resources. If we have mass migrations like the one's of the Okies it would be catastrophic.
Remember that scientists have been telling us climate change would be happening and when Al Gore sounded the alarm during his Vice Presidency they were probably closely monitoring the situation. Our representatives are definitely privy to things we aren't. Like a shadow government, the continuity of government and where to go in case of some catastrophe that threatens the US.
Not to worry though, Cheney has his underground bunker fortress all ready.

12. Good movie. Bad acting. Horrible production quality. But not as bad as The Fountainhead. |

14. Considering it was made by the Hollywood machine |
|
I thought it did a pretty good job overall: back then the big Hollywood studios liked to present a nice, clean, homogenized picture of America. I'm surprised it even got made.
I just finished the book for the first time a few weeks ago. Mr. Retrograde had to read it in high school - in Alabama in the 60s - and I don't see why anyone would assign it to students - unless they were being deliberately subversive.

18. It flies under the radar. |
|
My grandparents watched it and thought "Thank God we didn't have it that bad."
My parents watched it and thought , "It's dreary. The Depression was dreary. I'm not watching this."
My older siblings watched it and caught the subversiveness.
I watched it and bitched about the production quality.

16. I'd love to see a remake. |
|
I started a thread about that a few years ago. I was surprised how many people agreed there should be a remake. I would have liked to see (a younger) Tim Robbins as Tom Joad with Martin Sheen as Pa, Kathy Bates as Ma and David Carradine as the Preacher. I haven't decided who should play Rose o' Sharon but her final scene should definitely be in the remake. That's my biggest gripe with the movie-the ending. I remember reading the book for the first time and actually gasping at that last scene. I couldn't believe they changed the ending in the movie.
And don't even get me started on The Fountainhead. x(
